This Osasuna v Atlético fixture (Matchday 36) takes place on Tuesday 12 May 2026, at El Sadar, and that alone sets the tone for the build-up: Pamplona puts the pressure on, the tempo drops easily and the match often boils down to one-on-ones and second-ball situations. What’s more, the context is interesting: Osasuna are mid-table (10th) and want to finish the season on a high; Atlético are 4th, needing to secure a top-four spot, but are going through a run of rather inconsistent results.

For me, the key point is how Atleti handle the awkwardness of the pitch: if they start patiently and avoid silly mistakes, they have the greater quality. If the match gets scrappy, Osasuna are in their element… and that’s when Budimir and set-pieces become dangerous.

Osasuna

Osasuna sit 10th with 42 points, having scored 40 goals and conceded 42. In short: a competitive side, without any great flair, but reliable when they manage to dictate the game on their own terms. Their recent league form isn’t brilliant (they’ve had a run of tight results), and that usually translates into a very familiar script: a compact midfield, a solid defence in the box, and looking to take the lead through wide play or set-pieces.

I find Osasuna particularly interesting for two players and one context. The first is Budimir, who is having a very impressive season (17 league goals): he doesn’t need five chances to score, and at El Sadar he always smells blood from crosses from the flanks. The second is Rubén García, who is the main playmaker (5 assists) and understands very well when to accelerate and when to slow things down. And the context: at home, with the stadium behind them, Osasuna don’t usually give anything away. If Atlético come with defensive doubts, Osasuna have the tools to force them to defend their area.

Keep an eye on the injury/suspension list too: Sergio Herrera is listed as suspended in the previews, which could prove decisive if the match comes down to shots on goal and second balls near the box.

Atlético

Atlético sit 4th with 63 points (58 for, 37 against), but with a strange feeling: by position they are a “Champions League side”, yet their recent form has seen a spell of repeated stumbles. In fact, they are coming off a 0-1 defeat to Celta and there is talk of a “slump” in the league in recent fixtures, with several defeats in quick succession. In a Cholo’s team, this shows in the details: less bite in the boxes, more inaccuracy in the final pass and, above all, more anxiety when the opposition presses.

What I do like about Atleti is that, even when they’re not at their best, they have the players to compete in this match: Oblak keeps you in it, Koke organises the midfield, and up front (if available) the combination of Griezmann with a ‘9’ like Sørloth usually provides a finishing touch and presence. From the preview I’ve seen, the most likely starting XI points to a 4-4-2 with Griezmann and Sørloth, and a midfield pairing of Koke and Baena to provide more control than flair.

The big ‘but’ is the injuries: there’s a long list of players carrying knocks, and Nahuel Molina is out for the rest of the season. If Atlético are short on the flanks or in defence, you’ll pay for it at El Sadar, because Osasuna will flood your box and force you to clear the ball a lot.

Under 3.5 goals

Odds 7/20

This is the sort of match that, if there isn’t an early goal, tends to end with a low scoreline. El Sadar tends to produce scrappy encounters, and Atlético, when they’re struggling or short on players, usually prioritise not conceding first rather than going all out. Osasuna, for their part, aren’t a team that fall apart as a matter of course: if it’s 0-0 or 0-1, they stay in the game and don’t throw caution to the wind.

Half-time/Full-time: Draw/Atlético (X/2)

Odds 4/1

Osasuna start strongly, and when that happens the match gets bogged down in the first half, and in that context Atlético struggle to get into the game… but as the minutes tick by, quality prevails, especially if the bench allows you to change the tempo. If we go into the break level, Atleti can start to gain the upper hand through a barrage of crosses, set-pieces and the odd run by Griezmann between the lines.
