Harry Kane is a major doubt for Bayern Munich ahead of their Champions League clash against Real Madrid.

Harry Kane faces race against time as Bayern Munich prepare for crucial Real Madrid clash without their star man

A huge UEFA Champions League quarter-final awaits as Bayern Munich prepare to face Real Madrid, but the Bavarians are sweating over the fitness of Harry Kane ahead of Tuesday night’s first leg at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.

Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany confirmed that Kane will miss Saturday’s Bundesliga clash with Freiburg after picking up an injury while on international duty with England, and faces a race against time to be ready for the trip to the Spanish capital.

“Harry trained well until Sunday, then he felt his ankle with the national team,” Kompany said. “That affects tomorrow’s game – he won’t be available.

“That’s a medical issue, so I won’t go into too much detail. But what I can say is we haven’t talked about his calf.”

Despite ruling him out of the weekend’s Bundesliga match, Kompany remains hopeful ahead of the trip to the Bernabéu.

“Nevertheless, I’m positive about Tuesday. It’s not great, I’d like him to play against Freiburg, but as things stand today that won’t be possible.”

Kane’s importance to Bayern cannot be overstated. He has scored 10 goals in nine Champions League games this season, alongside a remarkable 31 goals in 26 Bundesliga matches.

His consistency and professionalism have made him a near ever-present since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023.

And in front of goal, his output has been staggering, with 133 goals in 136 matches in all competitions, as well as 31 assists.

Bayern Munich’s record without Harry Kane

In what is his third season at Bayern Munich, Harry Kane has missed a total of just 11 matches: seven through injury, one through suspension, and three for tactical reasons. And while Bayern’s record in his absence is still respectable, it is noticeably different to how they get on with him in the team.

2023/24:

Wins: 2
Defeats: 2
Draws: 0

2024/25:

Wins: 2
Defeats: 2
Draws: 1

2025/26:

Wins: 2
Defeats: 0
Draws: 0

This represents a win rate of just 54.5% without Harry Kane across those matches.

Conversely, with Kane in the team, Bayern’s win rate across all competitions jumps up to 74%.

Nicolas Jackson stats at Bayern Munich

With Kane potentially unavailable, Kompany would most likely turn to Nicolas Jackson, currently on loan from Chelsea. But while the Senegalese is the only other natural no.9 at the club, his output pales in comparison:

  • Appearances: 26 (Bundesliga 17, Champions League 8, DFB-Pokal 1)
  • Goals: 7 (Bundesliga 4, Champions League 3)
  • Assists: 3 (Bundesliga 1, Champions League 2)

Jackson has only completed 90 minutes on three occasions this season, and relying on him for the full game against an opponent like Real Madrid is not ideal.

The positive news for Bayern is the return of Jamal Musiala who trained with his teammates ahead of the Freiburg match, which could provide a timely boost against the Spanish giants.

Bayern may not be solely reliant on their star striker, with attacking talent like Michael Olise and Luis Diaz carrying massive threat and quality.

But the difference between Bayern with Harry Kane in the side and out of it is significant and, especially against a team like Real Madrid, there is no doubt they would prefer to have him leading the line.
