Liverpool have reportedly set sights on Jules Koundé following a catastrophic run of injuries at the right-back position this term.
While Jeremie Frimpong was signed last summer to provide elite attacking output from deep, his debut campaign on Merseyside has been ravaged by fitness issues, most recently limping off just 12 minutes into a substitute appearance for the Netherlands.
With primary deputy Conor Bradley already ruled out until late 2026 following major knee surgery and Joe Gomez struggling with fitness again, Slot has been forced to deploy midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones in makeshift defensive roles.
This instability has prompted the Reds to reignite their interest in Koundé, a player whose tactical discipline is viewed as the perfect counterbalance to the club’s current vulnerabilities.
Barcelona’s hierarchy is well aware of the intensifying interest from the Premier League, though their public stance remains one of cautious stability.
The 27-year-old has become a cornerstone of Hansi Flick’s defensive setup and recently formalised his commitment to the Catalan club by extending his contract through to 2030.
Despite this long-term security, the financial complications at the Camp Nou means that few players are truly untouchable.
Barcelona porting director Deco confirmed that while no formal bids were accepted last summer, the phones have not stopped ringing.
“There was no offer as such, but [Manchester] City called to ask if he was on the market. Since we told them no, there was no offer,” Deco explained to Mundo Deportivo.
However, with Liverpool reportedly prepared to sanction a deal worth up to £67 million (€80 million), the landscape is shifting despite Barcelona’s wish to retain his services.
Negotiating the premium for defensive versatility
The valuation of the French international reflects his evolution into one of Europe’s most reliable hybrid defenders, capable of operating as a traditional centre-back or a solid full-back.
For Liverpool, the steep asking price is weighed against the cost of another season without adequate cover. The club have already secured the services of French teenager Jeremy Jacquet for next season in a £60 million deal, yet the immediate need for a senior has made the Barcelona man the priority.

The London club famously failed to secure Koundé before his move to Spain four years ago and have reportedly kept a live file on the defender ever since.
Manchester City, meanwhile, view the Frenchman as a potential upgrade for their own rotating backline, particularly as they look to add more veteran experience to a squad that has occasionally lacked defensive depth this term.
