Sandro Tonali linked with Manchester United in summer transfer move
Manchester United have identified Sandro Tonali as a top midfield target ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

Old Trafford officials have reportedly identified the Italian international as their primary midfield target for a massive summer overhaul

The strategic direction of Manchester United’s midfield is poised for a shift this summer, with Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali emerging as the central figure in a high-stakes rebuilding project.

The pursuit comes amid the confirmed departure of veteran anchor Casemiro, who is set to exit Old Trafford at the end of the current season.

As the 2025/26 campaign enters its final months, a report from Manchester Evening News indicates that the Red Devils have made the 25-year-old Italian their priority acquisition.

While United have monitored other Premier League talents such as Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Tonali has reportedly shot to the top of the shortlist due to his elite “box-to-box engine” and proven top-flight pedigree.

Newcastle’s hierarchy has remained firm on a valuation exceeding £100 million (€115 million), a figure that would represent a landmark investment for any English club.

Newcastle hierarchy cites long-term contract

The Magpies’ position in these negotiations is bolstered by a contract that runs until 2029, with the club reportedly holding an option to extend the deal until 2030.

This extension was signed in secret during Tonali’s ten-month gambling ban, a period during which the midfielder voluntarily offered to take a pay cut.

Despite this long-term commitment, Tonali has been remarkably candid about the fluid nature of the modern transfer market. While expressing contentment with his current environment, he has refused to provide the traditional one-club loyalty pledges often expected by supporters.

“I don’t want to say I want to stay here 10 years and in two years, three years, four years [or] five years I will go,” Tonali said during an interview last November.

“I want to think, just for me, year for year. This is football. The last summer was tough for us, for Alex [Isak], but this is football. If you have an option for your life, for another team you need to think about everything. I don’t want to say ‘Yes, I want to stay here 10 years,’ but now I’m happy here. I don’t think anything about another team.”

Arsenal interest in February

The narrative surrounding Tonali has already survived several rounds of misinformation. In February, brief reports linked the midfielder with a shock move to Arsenal, a claim that was swiftly rubbished by both Newcastle and the player’s representative.

Agent Giuseppe Riso was blunt in his dismissal of the North London rumours, stating to Sky Sports, “We never had any conversation with Arsenal. Newcastle were never gonna let Tonali leave in January. There’s absolutely nothing to it. We didn’t even talk about it.”

While Arsenal‘s interest was reportedly abandoned due to Newcastle’s refusal to negotiate, Manchester United appears prepared to test that resolve with a financial package that could reset the market.
