Morgan Rogers to Arsenal? Why the Gunners want Aston Villa and England star

Football transfer rumour: Morgan Rogers to Arsenal
Morgan Rogers transfer rumours are heating up with Arsenal said to be preparing a bid for the Aston Villa man

Arsenal are reportedly preparing a £105 million move for Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers. Here’s why Mikel Arteta is targeting the England international

Arsenal could be set to make one of the biggest transfers of the summer, with reports suggesting the Premier League champions are preparing a massive bid for Aston Villa and England attacker Morgan Rogers.

Arsenal transfer target Morgan Rogers is understood to be valued at around £105 million, a fee that would eclipse the club’s current transfer record set when Declan Rice joined from West Ham for £100m in 2023.

Although no deal has yet been agreed, Arsenal’s interest is believed to be genuine. From the player’s tactical flexibility to Arsenal’s recent transfer philosophy, as well as Aston Villa’s PSR hurdles, the move appears to make increasing sense for all parties.

Why do Arsenal want Morgan Rogers?

There are many reasons why Arsenal are interested in Morgan Rogers.

But what stands out, as well as his obvious technical ability, is his tactical flexibility. Mikel Arteta has consistently built squads around players capable of performing in multiple positions, allowing Arsenal to change shape without making wholesale personnel changes.

Riccardo Calafiori was bought as a centre-back, but can play just as well at left-back. The same applies to Piero Hincapie. Noni Madueke, bought last season from Chelsea, has featured on both flanks. Eberechi Eze, signed from Crystal Palace last summer, often enjoys a free role in a central position, as well as his usual left-wing role. And the list could go on.

At Aston Villa, Rogers has primarily operated as a central attacking midfielder, playing behind Ollie Watkins in a free-roaming No.10 role. However, he is equally comfortable starting from the left wing before cutting inside onto his stronger right foot.

England have also demonstrated another side to his game during the 2026 World Cup. Rogers featured twice from the right wing and, in his only start against Argentina in the semi-finals, provided the assist for Anthony Gordon‘s opening goal from that position.

That positional flexibility makes him an attractive option across all three attacking roles.

Arsenal’s need for another forward has increased following Leandro Trossard’s move to Besiktas. While the club have already strengthened by signing Greek winger Christos Tziolis from Club Brugge for £34 million, Arteta has repeatedly spoken about building a squad with genuine competition in every position rather than relying on one specialist for each role.

Morgan Rogers’ age could make him a long-term signing

Morgan Rogers’ age also makes his signature appealing to Arsenal, something that appears a factor in the Gunners’ long-term recruitment strategy. The England international turns 24 on July 26, meaning he is only just entering the start of his peak years.

Since joining Aston Villa from Middlesbrough, Rogers has developed into one of the Premier League’s most complete attacking midfielders under Unai Emery. His technical quality has always been evident, but his tactical understanding and decision-making have improved significantly over the past two seasons under the Basque tactician.

Players with such good technical ability are often labelled a ‘luxury player’, yet Rogers is far from that. He presses defenders on the ball, he tracks his full-back, and has good all-round tactical understanding.

Morgan Rogers stats with Aston Villa 2025/26

Rogers enjoyed arguably the best season of his career in 2025/26, playing a pivotal role as Aston Villa won the Europa League and secured fourth place in the Premier League.

His fitness and availability further adds to his appeal. Last season, he featured in 37 out of 38 Premier League matches, and in each of Villa’s 15 Europa League matches.

His European performances were particularly impressive. Rogers featured in every Europa League match and crowned the campaign by scoring a stunning goal and adding an assist in Villa’s 3-0 final victory over Freiburg.

Those numbers prove why Arsenal Morgan Rogers has become one of the summer’s most talked-about transfer stories.

Morgan Rogers’ position

Morgan Rogers is naturally an attacking midfielder but offers considerably more than a traditional no.10.

His combination of physical strength, close control and dribbling allows him to receive the ball under pressure before driving forward, while his link-up play makes him equally effective between the lines or in wider positions.

Although the majority of his appearances last season came in the no.10 role, roughly one-third were from the left wing. According to Transfermarkt, he played 33 times as a central attacking-midfielder, and 17 times as a left-winger, as well as sporadic appearances in a central striking role and deeper-lying midfield position.

His ability to play centrally, on either flank and even deeper when required fits perfectly with Arteta’s preference for fluid attacking rotations.

Could Aston Villa be preparing for life without Rogers?

Arsenal’s interest has gathered further momentum because of Aston Villa’s own activity in the transfer market.

Villa are reportedly close to signing Switzerland international Johan Manzambi for a club-record fee of more than £50 million. The 23-year-old was one of the breakout stars of the 2026 World Cup, and operates in a similar attacking role and could be viewed as a potential successor should Rogers leave.

The Midlands club have also been forced into significant sales in recent transfer windows due to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). This summer, Youri Tielemans has joined Manchester United, while Lucas Digne has completed a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

With Rogers entering his prime, offering versatility across the frontline and coming off the most productive season of his career, it is easy to see why he has emerged as one of Arsenal’s leading transfer targets.

Now it depends on whether the Gunners are prepared to meet Aston Villa’s lofty valuation, reportedly over £100m.
