Unai Emery’s incredible record as Europa League specialist aims to guide Aston Villa to glory

Emery eyes fifth Europa League crown as Aston Villa target end to 44-year trophy drought
Unai Emery has set his sights on leading Aston Villa to their first piece of major European silverware since 1982 this season as the Midlands club prepare for a Europa League quarter-final against Bologna.
The ghost of Rotterdam has loomed over Villa Park for more than four decades, but under the guidance of a man synonymous with Europa League success, the wait for continental glory may finally be nearing its end.
Since Peter Withe’s famous winner against Bayern Munich secured the European Cup in 1982, the claret and blue faithful have yearned for a return to the winner’s enclosure on the world stage.
Now, as they prepare for the first leg of their quarter-final against Bologna at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara this Thursday, the statistics suggest that in Emery, they possess the ultimate specialist for the task.
The Spaniard is currently chasing a record-extending fifth title in this competition, having already secured a historic three consecutive Europa League triumphs with Sevilla and a subsequent title with Villarreal.
By securing a 1-0 victory over Lille in the first leg on March 12, Emery reached a remarkable milestone of 100 victories as Aston Villa coach.
In doing so, he became the fastest coach in the club’s history to hit 100 wins, achieving the feat in just 181 matches, significantly faster than legendary predecessors Ron Saunders and Joe Mercer.
Unai Emery’s Europa League knockout dominance
The numbers behind Emery’s career in the Europa League are staggering, painting a picture of a manager who has mastered the art of the two-legged tie.
Remarkably, the last time Emery lost a knockout fixture over two legs in this competition was during the 2011/12 season, when his Valencia side fell to Atlético Madrid at the semi-final stage.
In the 14 years since that defeat, his record has been virtually unblemished. Following that setback, he won three consecutive trophies with Sevilla, reached the final with Arsenal, and eventually lifted the trophy again with Villarreal in 2021.
Even while building the project at Villa Park, he has maintained this elite standard, guiding the club to a Conference League semi-final in 2024 and a Champions League quarter-final one year later.
Across 104 matches managed in the competition, Emery has recorded 68 victories, 22 draws, and only 14 defeats. Impressively, his teams have been prolific in front of goal, netting 216 times while conceding 114.
Meanwhile, Villa’s home record in Europe under Emery has been outstanding, with the Spanish coach having led his team to five wins in six Champions League games, five victories in as many Europa League matches and five wins in six Conference League duels. In fact, Aston Villa have suffered only one home defeat – to eventual winners Olympiacos – in 17 games in Europe with Emery in charge.
This wealth of experience will be vital as Villa navigate a Bologna side that has proven to be a resilient opponent during the current campaign.
