The Liverpool captain is impressed with the 17-year-old while head coach Arne Slot calls on him to study Mohamed Salah’s consistency after a superb display against Wolves.

The internal hierarchy at Liverpool have made their expectations clear for emerging star Rio Ngumoha following his breakout performance in the FA Cup fifth round.

The 17-year-old winger, who arrived from Chelsea’s academy in 2024, was a primary catalyst in the Reds’ 1-3 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.

After a frustrating Premier League loss to the same side just three days earlier, Ngumoha was handed a starting role at Molineux and responded with a display that earned him Player of the Match honours.

Speaking after the match, club captain Virgil van Dijk was quick to praise the teenager’s integration into the senior squad while emphasising the need for a grounded approach.

“Obviously we all see day in, day out how special talent he is in terms of one-v-ones and the pace he drives at players,” Van Dijk noted.

“He’s working hard, he’s a good boy and we are looking after him. We speak to him constantly and he needs to keep learning, keep soaking it all up and take it into his progress. [Friday] was a good day for him. Nothing more, nothing less. He has to keep going.”

Building a long-term legacy through the Salah blueprint

While Ngumoha’s flair has drawn comparisons to some of the league’s most exciting wingers, Liverpool coach Arne Slot is directing the youngster’s attention toward the most prolific example in the dressing room.

Slot acknowledged that while the teenager’s talent is “special,” the transition from a flashy prospect to a world-class staple requires a level of stamina and mental fortitude that few possess.

“A player that, as we know, because we weren’t seeing him for the first time, he is able to beat his man in one-v-one situations,” Slot noted.

“That is something you don’t see a lot in modern football, so good performance from him.”

The manager was pointed in his advice, specifically citing Mohamed Salah as the standard for Ngumoha to emulate.

Slot emphasised that the difficulty in top-flight football isn’t merely having a single good game, but maintaining that level through a gruelling schedule.

“That is special if you are 17 years old and you can impact a Premier League game – I know it is an FA Cup game, but two Premier League sides – in this manner, that shows that he has a lot of qualities,” Slot said.

“On the other side, there is a player, Mo Salah, who he needs to take the example of. Being a good player is not so difficult, but being a good player every three days over a long, long period of time is something we are going to work on with him to ensure he can get to those levels.”
