Why Are So Many Scottish Premiership Games Postponed This Weekend?

Football goal blocked with yellow STOP tape

Saturday’s Scottish Premiership fixture list looks remarkably bare: five of the six scheduled matches have been postponed, leaving Dundee United against Dundee as the division’s only game of the day. Anyone checking this weekend’s football markets or betting bonuses will therefore find a very different Scottish card from the one originally published. The reason is not bad weather, policing or television scheduling — it is European football.

Why are five Scottish Premiership games postponed this weekend?

The SPFL has a rule specifically designed to help Scottish clubs attempting to reach the league phase of UEFA competitions.

Clubs involved in a Champions League, Europa League or Conference League play-off have the right to postpone the Premiership match scheduled between the two legs of their European tie. Crucially, they do not need the agreement of their domestic opponent. The SPFL board approved the policy in April 2025 following a recommendation from its Competitions Working Group. It was retained for this season.

Five clubs asked to use the provision before the SPFL’s July deadline:

  • Celtic
  • Hearts
  • Rangers
  • Motherwell
  • Hibernian

Those postponements became relevant once the clubs reached their respective UEFA play-off rounds. The league’s reasoning is straightforward. Its stated aim is:

to support clubs aiming to reach the league phase of UEFA competitions.”

Dundee United v Dundee is the only Premiership game left on Saturday

All of which leaves one fixture carrying the Scottish Premiership on its own: Dundee United v Dundee at Tannadice. Kick-off is 5:45pm on Saturday, 22 August, with the derby shown live on Premier Sports. Dundee confirmed the revised kick-off time when the television selections were announced.

Dundee United v Dundee betting markets to watch

Dundee United are narrow favourites at Tannadice, but the goals markets may offer more interest. 18 of the last 28 Dundee derbies have produced over 2.5 goals, while both teams have scored in 17, making Over 2.5 and BTTS Yes stronger angles than backing a low-scoring contest.

Derbies can move quickly in the market: check the latest Betmaze price before kick-off and back the value, not just the favourite.

Is postponing five games unusual?

Seeing five matches disappear from a six-game Premiership round is certainly unusual. The mechanism behind it, however, is deliberate rather than improvised. The rule was created precisely because a Scottish league weekend can land between the two legs of UEFA play-offs. What makes this weekend exceptional is the number of Scottish clubs simultaneously reaching that stage and choosing to exercise their right to postpone.

The result is one of the strangest-looking Premiership Saturdays in recent memory: one derby, five postponements and much of Scottish football’s attention fixed on Europe.
