The FA Cup final is upon us, with Chelsea and Manchester City set to battle it out for the title this Saturday. The match comes at a different juncture for each side: Chelsea have only this trophy left to win, whilst City will be aiming to lift it whilst still in the thick of the Premier League title race.

When it comes to betting, I look at two things: any key absentees Chelsea might have and whether City can impose their possession game without making silly mistakes.

Chelsea

With Chelsea this season, I’ve had the same feeling for many weeks: they’re a team with the talent to compete at the top, but with an inconsistency that has taken its toll in the league. When they’re on form, they have serious attacking resources: aggressive full-backs, midfielders who get forward, and plenty of threat in the final pass. The problem is that they don’t always sustain that intensity for 90 minutes, and in big games this is particularly noticeable in their control of transitions.

As for the squad’s condition, there’s one point I can’t overlook: they’ve had key players out injured, and that affects their fluidity, especially in defence (which is precisely where City are most punishing). If Chelsea can’t field their most ‘balanced’ starting eleven, they run the risk of falling apart: trying to press high up the pitch without coordination, losing cover in midfield and ending up defending deep near their own goal.

Even so, in a match of this calibre, I expect a brave Chelsea. At home (or in a final-like atmosphere), they usually compete and come to life. The key for me is whether they can convert possession into shots without giving the ball away in areas where City will punish you.

Manchester City

City arrive with that ‘mature’ team feel: they know when to step up the pace and when to slow the game down. And they’re also at a stage in the season where it’s clear that, even when rotating players, they maintain their competitive edge. I pay close attention to one thing: even when they’re not at their best, they usually score; and when they open the scoring, they become a very difficult opponent because they force you to take risks.

Up front, with a ‘No. 9’ who thrives in the box and wingers who attack the space, they’re a team that punishes any defence that’s out of position. And in midfield, if they manage to impose their passing game, they steer the match where they want: they make you chase shadows, draw you in and then break you down with a one-two or a change of direction.

Physically, they’ve also had a few notable absences in defence, but their great strength is the depth of their squad: they can make adjustments without losing their structure. For me, in a Chelsea v City match, it’s usually City who make the difference when the opposition gets desperate: if Chelsea start playing ‘by the book’, City are the best team in the world at punishing you with a clean break.

Beni

Over 1.5 goals

Odds 33/100

Given the talent both sides have up front and the way these matches usually play out, we’re sure to see an end-to-end affair, where two goals seems a very realistic line to me without having to predict the winner.

Manchester City to win and over 1.5

Odds 81/50

City will be looking to win it from the start and if that happens, Chelsea are likely to leave spaces as they try to equalise. The Citizens tend to score a lot and this combination covers us for wins with scores of 0-2, 1-2, 1-3… very typical results when City impose their attacking threat and Chelsea compete, but concede.
