Can Hearts Really Win the Scottish Premiership?

Hearts, Celtic and Rangers in a Scottish Premiership

Seven games do not make a title race, but they can make the old assumptions look slightly less comfortable. Hearts sit third in the Scottish Premiership on 13 points, five behind Celtic and three behind Rangers. That is close enough to dream, but the next three weeks will show whether this is a genuine challenge or simply a strong start.

How close are Hearts to Celtic and Rangers?

The table is compact at the top. Celtic lead with 18 points from seven matches, Rangers have 16 and Hearts have 13. The Jambos also own a +6 goal difference, better than Rangers’ +4, although Celtic are out in front at +10.

Five points is manageable in October. The harder question is whether Hearts can keep taking points when the calendar turns.

Wouter Vrancken arrived in June after transforming Sint-Truiden from relegation candidates into European qualifiers. Asked whether Hearts should aim to challenge for the title, his answer was a clean “for sure”. The ambition is not being hidden.

Vrancken has said Hearts should compete with the Glasgow clubs and try to “overachieve”.

Why October could define the Hearts title challenge

This is where the schedule gets dressed in sharp edges.

Hearts host St Mirren on 10 October, then begin their Conference League league phase against Nordsjælland five days later. Celtic away follows on 18 October, before a trip to Trabzonspor on 22 October, Motherwell away on 25 October and Rangers at Tynecastle on 28 October.

The European matches between those league fixtures make squad depth part of the title conversation. Hearts need more than a best XI capable of troubling Celtic and Rangers. Rotation and recovery must work without lowering the level.

What do the Scottish Premiership title odds say?

The market is much colder than the table. Hearts are still a double-figure outsider, which makes the gap between early-season performance and long-term expectation the story.

At 16/1, backing Hearts is a judgement that their real chance is bigger than the implied probability in the price.

What would make Hearts genuine title contenders?

  • Survive Celtic and Rangers: Hearts need to avoid the table stretching away. A win in either fixture would change the mood, while four points from the two would be a major statement.
  • Stay consistent against the rest: Title challenges are often hurt more by dropping points in winnable matches than by losing away to Celtic or Rangers.
  • Manage European football: Conference League games add prestige, but the Thursday Sunday schedule can quickly test squad depth.
  • Use the underdog advantage: Celtic and Rangers carry title pressure every week. Hearts can attack the race with less expectation.
  • The price still reflects the risk: At 16/1, Hearts remain a bet for believers rather than a safe option.
  • Key checkpoint, 28 October: By then, the league table should give a much clearer picture of whether Hearts are genuine contenders.
BetoBetoThe bold one
I like Hearts as the elegant outsider, but October is about surviving the runway before buying the champagne
BeniBeniThe conservative one
At 16/1 I can understand the temptation, just do not confuse a five-point gap with a five-month guarantee.
