The first Edinburgh derby of the 2026/27 Scottish Premiership season arrives at Easter Road with very little separating the two sides.

Hibernian and Hearts both have six points from their opening three league matches and head into this one chasing a third successive Premiership victory. Hearts have looked the more explosive attacking side recently, although they have also carried the heavier European workload, while Hibs have responded well after their own continental disappointment.

If I had to bet my last penny, the goals markets make far more sense here than trying to pick a winner between two sides priced so closely together.

How Hibernian and Hearts are shaping up

Hibernian form

Hibs responded well after losing 2-1 to Motherwell, following that result with back-to-back 2-1 wins against Rangers and Dundee. Their European elimination against Gent was painful, but the victory at Dundee afterwards showed a strong response from David Gray’s side.

Rocky Bushiri is the main defensive absentee with an Achilles injury.

Hearts form

Hearts also arrive in good shape after overcoming a difficult start. Following defeat to Aberdeen, they thrashed Dundee United 4-0 before beating St Johnstone 2-1.

Their attack is firing, although the European workload could take its toll after they needed extra time and penalties against Rapid Vienna. Tom Renaud is out, alongside several defenders who remain unavailable.

Key factors behind my Hibernian vs Hearts prediction

1. Both attacks are producing in the league

Hibernian have scored five league goals, while Hearts have seven. More importantly for the goals markets, Hibs have scored and conceded in all three Premiership matches. Hearts have seen both teams score in two of their three.

Combined, that gives us five BTTS results from six league matches.

2. Hearts’ recent matches have been particularly open

This is the stat that really sets off my tipster radar. Both teams have scored in each of Hearts’ last five competitive fixtures, a run that has produced 21 goals in total.

Vrancken’s side carry plenty of attacking threat, but they have not always managed to shut matches down once the game becomes stretched. That could be important at Easter Road against a Hibs side who have already scored twice at Ibrox and twice at Dundee this season.

3. European fatigue could show in the second half

Neither club has had a quiet August, but Hearts’ schedule has been especially demanding. Their second leg against Rapid went to extra time and penalties before they returned to domestic action.

Hearts were 2-0 ahead against St Johnstone at half-time but came under sustained pressure in the second half after conceding shortly after the restart.

Hibs arrive with the better recent defensive numbers, but all three of their league matches have finished 2-1. Hearts, meanwhile, have scored 13 goals in their last five matches while conceding eight. Everything points towards an open derby with chances at both ends.

Recent Hibernian vs Hearts head-to-head

The last five league derbies have produced three Hearts wins and two Hibernian victories:

DateResult
26 Apr 2026Hibernian 1-2 Hearts
10 Feb 2026Hearts 1-0 Hibernian
27 Dec 2025Hibernian 3-2 Hearts
4 Oct 2025Hearts 1-0 Hibernian
2 Mar 2025Hibernian 2-1 Hearts

Hearts have therefore won three of the last four meetings, including their most recent trip to Easter Road, but I would not use the head-to-head record as the main betting argument. Both squads have changed considerably since then.

Match-winner market is extremely tight

The current 90-minute prices make Hibernian narrow favourites:

Match resultOdds
Hibernian win6/4
Draw23/10
Hearts win13/8

The prices tell the story rather well. I do not see enough between these two sides to make either outright price especially attractive. In the goals market, both teams to score is currently priced at 4/6, while draw and both teams to score is available at 16/5. Odds checked on 1 September 2026 and naturally subject to change.

Both teams to score

Odds 7/10

I’m keeping this straightforward. Hibs have seen both teams score in all three league games, while Hearts’ last five matches in all competitions have all delivered goals at both ends. I’d rather back that pattern than try to split two very evenly matched sides.

Draw & Both Teams to Score

Odds 16/5

Same match script, bigger swing. I can see both sides landing a punch without either doing enough to take control. A score draw feels live here, and 1-1 is the result I keep coming back to.
