Luke Humphries faces Ryan Searle at Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle on Thursday 22 October in the opening round of the 2026 PDC European Championship, with the match scheduled for approximately 8:30pm BST.

Cool Hand arrives as world number two, fresh from winning the World Grand Prix and reaching the Swiss Darts Trophy final. Searle also showed encouraging form in Maastricht, where he reached the quarter-finals. Humphries has the stronger season-long scoring numbers, but this best-of-11 contest leaves little room for mistakes. I fancy Humphries to progress, although Heavy Metal has enough scoring power to make it competitive.

Luke Humphries vs Ryan Searle: match preview

Humphries arrives in Dortmund after an excellent October. He recovered from a 3-0 deficit to beat Gerwyn Price 6-4 in the World Grand Prix final before reaching another European Tour final in Basel.

His performances at the Swiss Darts Trophy were particularly impressive. Humphries averaged 114.15 in a 6-0 victory over Krzysztof Ratajski and 111.17 against Mensur Suljovic. Jonny Clayton eventually beat him 8-4 in the final, despite Humphries averaging 101.75. Searle has also shown he can compete with elite opposition. His Dutch Darts Championship campaign ended in a 6-3 quarter-final defeat to Gian van Veen, but he still averaged 100.50.

Humphries is priced at 4/11 to win, with Searle available at 2/1. The favourite’s consistency makes him the logical pick, although the short format gives Searle an opportunity to cause an upset. The winner will face Danny Noppert or Stephen Bunting in the last 16.

Recent form and key results

PlayerRecent completed results
Luke HumphriesLost 4-8 to Jonny Clayton; beat Mensur Suljovic 7-4; beat Krzysztof Ratajski 6-0. Last five: 4 wins, 1 defeat
Ryan SearleLost 3-6 to Gian van Veen; beat Ross Smith 6-4; beat Dirk van Duijvenbode 6-5. Last five: 2 wins, 3 defeats

Humphries has averaged 100.33 across 120 recorded matches in 2026, compared with Searle’s 94.98 across 90. That 5.35-point difference highlights the favourite’s greater scoring consistency. However, Searle’s recent performances deserve respect. His 100.50 average against Van Veen demonstrated that he can compete at a high level even when the result goes against him.

Humphries has enjoyed more success recently, but Searle arrives with competitive match practice after reaching the Maastricht quarter-finals on Sunday.

Preparation and the main uncertainty

Humphries has not competed since the Swiss Darts Trophy final on 11 October. That longer break could leave him refreshed, although Searle has the advantage of more recent tournament action. Heavy Metal also has a psychological boost from their last meeting, winning 6-4 at the 2025 Swiss Darts Trophy.

The biggest uncertainty is the short format. With only six legs required, one missed double or a brief scoring slump can quickly change the match. Humphries remains the stronger player on recent evidence, but he cannot afford to give Searle too many opportunities.

Tactical analysis: can Searle disrupt Humphries’ scoring rhythm?

Humphries’ main advantage is his ability to produce consistently heavy scoring. His 114.15 average against Ratajski demonstrated how quickly he can take control when his treble hitting and finishing work together. Searle’s greatest weapon is his own scoring power. When Heavy Metal finds his rhythm, he can produce consecutive high-scoring visits and put opponents under pressure on their doubles.

That makes the opening legs particularly important. If Humphries establishes an early advantage, his consistency should help him maintain control. However, Searle has already demonstrated his ability to handle close matches, including his deciding-leg victory over Van Duijvenbode. I expect Humphries to create more opportunities to break throw, but Searle should have enough chances to keep the contest competitive. A 6-4 victory for Cool Hand looks plausible.

Luke Humphries vs Ryan Searle: alternative betting odds

Humphries is the favourite, but the correct-score, total-legs and 180s markets provide additional betting opportunities. The following fractional odds are indicative pre-match prices for 22 October 2026.

Betting marketOdds
Humphries to win 6-45/1
Over 9.5 total legs5/4
Under 9.5 total legs4/7
Over 5.5 total 180s1/1
Humphries over 3.5 individual 180s6/5
Highest checkout over 111.55/6
The Under 9.5 total legs market at 4/7 is worth considering if Humphries establishes control early. His recent scoring levels suggest he is capable of winning comfortably. However, Over 9.5 legs at 5/4 offers an alternative for those expecting Searle to push the favourite towards a deciding leg. For a bigger return, Humphries to win 6-4 at 5/1 is my preferred correct-score selection. Searle has the scoring ability to take several legs, but I still trust Humphries to produce the crucial finish.

Luke Humphries to Win

Odds 9/25

I'm backing Cool Hand to get through this one. His recent numbers have been excellent, and that World Grand Prix comeback says plenty about his ability to handle big moments. Searle will have his spells, but over six winning legs, I trust Humphries to find the crucial doubles.

Luke Humphries to Win 6-4

Odds 5/1

Here's my cheekier shout. I fancy Searle to make a proper contest of it, especially after the way he scored in Maastricht. Four legs for Heavy Metal feels realistic, but I still see Humphries finding that decisive break of throw. I'm going for 6-4.
