Motherwell vs Freiburg Prediction (Conference League) Odds and Bets 20.08.2026

Motherwell and Freiburg will meet in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League play-off, with a place in the next stage at stake.
The Steelmen have already negotiated two qualifying rounds and were particularly convincing in their 2-0 home win over HJK Helsinki. Freiburg, however, represent a considerable step up in quality: the German side finished seventh in the Bundesliga and reached the Europa League final last season.
If I had to pick a side, I would lean towards Freiburg, although I do not see Motherwell as opponents the visitors can simply brush aside.

How Motherwell and Freiburg come into the match
Motherwell form
There has been plenty to like about Motherwell’s European performances so far. They came through their opening tie against HB with wins in both legs, then drew 1-1 away to HJK before scoring twice in a 2-0 victory at Fir Park, giving Motherwell a 3-1 aggregate win.
Sunday’s League Cup exit to Stenhousemuir is the most obvious warning sign. Motherwell lost 1-0 after extra time, although Alfred Johansson made eight changes from the side that faced HJK. That rotation is important, as several players likely to start in Europe were not required to play the full 120 minutes.
I would not read too much into that defeat, but Freiburg are likely to punish any lapses in concentration far more ruthlessly.
Freiburg form
Freiburg have not yet played a competitive match this season, so their preparation has to be assessed differently from Motherwell’s. Their pedigree, however, is difficult to ignore. Julian Schuster’s side finished seventh in the Bundesliga last season before reaching the Europa League final, where they lost 3-0 to Aston Villa.
Their European record during that campaign was nine wins, two draws and four defeats in 15 matches.
Their final preparations have also been encouraging. Freiburg beat Strasbourg twice on 8 August, both by 2-0 scorelines, before defeating Crystal Palace 3-0 in their final friendly.
Key factors behind my Motherwell vs Freiburg prediction
1. Motherwell have performed very well in Europe
This is not simply a case of backing against Motherwell because they play in the Scottish Premiership. They are unbeaten across four Conference League qualifiers, with three wins and an 8-1 aggregate scoring record.
That is why I do not want to sound like an outright Freiburg supporter despite the obvious gap in quality between the two squads.
2. Freiburg represent a major step up in opposition
HJK already caused Motherwell problems in Finland. Freiburg come from a completely different competitive level: seventh in the Bundesliga and Europa League finalists only three months ago.
Recent friendlies suggest that the attacking group of Vincenzo Grifo, Niklas Beste, Yuito Suzuki and Igor Matanovic is beginning to click.
3. The physical situation is more balanced than it first appears
Motherwell had to play 120 minutes against Stenhousemuir on Sunday, just four days before this match.
The details matter, though. Johansson made eight changes for that cup tie.
4. Freiburg do not need to settle the tie at Fir Park
This is the main reason I am not expecting an all-out attacking approach from the visitors. Freiburg have the second leg at home on 27 August, so a controlled away performance would suit them perfectly well.
That supports Freiburg in the match-winner market because of their greater quality, but it also makes a comfortable victory less automatic than the theoretical gap between the two clubs might suggest.
5. The market has Freiburg as clear favourites
The current UK market has Freiburg as strong favourites. At 4/11, the price implies roughly a 73% chance of an away win before bookmaker margin is taken into account.
I think that assessment is broadly justified rather than obviously inflated, given Freiburg’s recent European pedigree, although there is little room for error at such a short price.
For those looking for a bigger return, the handicap market is more interesting.

What stands out most to me is Motherwell’s current European record. Eight goals scored and only one conceded across four qualifiers is an excellent return, while both of their home matches have ended in 2-0 victories.
That is enough to make me cautious about treating a comfortable Freiburg win as a certainty.
