Can Napoli turn their form around at home? The Italian side have not made the best start to Serie A and now come up against an Arsenal team arriving on the back of three straight wins.

Both clubs begin their 2026/27 Champions League league-phase campaigns here, and I see a fairly clear contrast in the form of the two sides. Arsenal’s defensive control and Napoli’s recent vulnerability make the visitors the side I’m more interested in backing.

How Napoli and Arsenal Come Into the Match

Napoli Form

Napoli arrive with more questions than answers. They opened with a 2-0 win over Genoa, but then suffered back-to-back defeats against Como and Inter, with the latter particularly painful: they were 2-0 up and still lost 3-2.

The concern is not just the five goals conceded, but how much pressure they are allowing: 61 shots across three league matches, including 29 against Inter. They still carry a threat going forward, but their games are becoming far too open.

On top of that, Scott McTominay will be unavailable, a significant absence in a midfield already struggling to control matches.

Arsenal Form

Arsenal arrive in almost the opposite position: three wins from three, six goals scored and only one conceded. They have won comfortably, narrowly and from behind, most recently in the 2-1 victory over Chelsea.

What stands out most is their defensive control. Arsenal have allowed far less than Napoli while still creating plenty at the other end.

The only concern is at the back, where Saliba, Timber and Mosquera are carrying fitness doubts. That is why I like Arsenal here, although I would wait for the final team news before getting too aggressive with handicaps.

Key Factors Behind My Napoli vs Arsenal Prediction

1. Arsenal Have the Stronger Defensive Base

For me, this is the biggest difference between the two sides. Napoli and Arsenal have produced almost identical attacking volume — 42 shots compared with 43 — but the numbers at the other end are worlds apart.

Napoli have allowed 61 attempts; Arsenal just 24 across their opening three league matches.

That tells me Arsenal are controlling where and how matches are played far more effectively.

2. Napoli’s Game Management Is a Concern

Going 2-0 up against Inter showed Napoli’s attacking ceiling. Losing 3-2 from that position showed the other side of the story.

It was not simply a freak comeback either. Napoli were already allowing too much pressure, and against Saka, Ødegaard and Havertz that is a real concern.

3. McTominay’s Absence Matters

McTominay brings physicality, late runs into the box and an extra goal threat from midfield. I do not like building bets around vague injury rumours, but this absence is confirmed.

Without him, Napoli look slightly less imposing in an area where Arsenal can use Declan Rice and Ødegaard, with plenty of depth behind them.

4. Napoli Do Have Two Genuine Advantages

I would not dismiss the hosts. They are playing at the Maradona and have roughly an extra day’s recovery after facing Inter on Saturday, while Arsenal played Chelsea on Sunday.

That is exactly why I prefer some protection against the draw in the safer bet rather than assuming Arsenal’s excellent domestic start means they simply have to win.

5. Where I See the Betting Value

The straight Arsenal price looks fair rather than spectacular. My preference is to reduce the impact of Napoli’s home advantage in the conservative bet and then use Arsenal’s defensive profile to improve the price with a more ambitious selection.

Both angles point in the same direction: Arsenal are the more likely side to control the match, but I do not expect this to turn into a shoot-out.

The attacking numbers are fairly similar; the real difference is control. Arsenal have allowed 37 fewer opposition shots while still producing slightly more at the other end.

Napoli have enough quality to cause problems, but Arsenal are giving opponents far fewer chances. That control is the statistic that matters most to my prediction.

Napoli vs Arsenal Head-to-Head

The two clubs have met four times in competitive football. Arsenal have won three and Napoli one, with no draws.

Their most recent tie came in the 2018/19 Europa League quarter-finals, when Arsenal won 2-0 in London and 1-0 in Naples. Their two Champions League meetings in 2013/14 both ended 2-0 to the home side.

I would not put too much weight on that history — the squads are completely different now — but Arsenal’s previous win in Naples at least stops me from overstating the venue factor.

Arsenal are favourites after their strong start, but Naples and Arteta’s defensive doubts call for some caution. The away price makes sense, although I would not treat it as a banker. Odds checked on 7 September 2026 and may move before kick-off.

The Analyst: Arsenal Draw No Bet

Odds 3/10

I’m backing the side giving opponents far less to work with. Napoli can make this awkward at home, so I want the draw covered rather than forcing the away win.

This feels very Arteta: control the dangerous moments, squeeze the game and nick it. If Arsenal win, I’m much more interested in something like 1-0 or 2-1 than a goal-fest.
