This European Tour encounter between Gian van Veen and Connor Scutt promises to be a high-standard affair between two players who are extremely comfortable on the ProTour stage. In these shorter formats, the key variables are first-nine average and efficiency on the outer ring — especially when breaks of throw are rare.

Van Veen brings explosive scoring and youthful fearlessness, while Scutt offers a more measured, technically sound approach. If both settle early, we could be looking at a match decided by a single missed dart at double.

Gian van Veen

Van Veen has developed into one of the most dangerous young players on the circuit. When I watch him in European Tour and floor events, what strikes me is the fluency of his scoring phase. His first nine darts regularly sit in the 100+ bracket when he’s in rhythm, and he’s more than capable of firing in multiple 180s in quick succession.

Over recent ProTour appearances, he’s consistently produced match averages in the mid-to-high 90s, with peaks comfortably over the ton. What’s improved significantly in the last 12 months is his composure on doubles. Earlier in his development, he could let legs drift, but now he’s far more clinical inside 80 — particularly strong on tops and double 16.

The only slight concern for me is tempo control. If an opponent slows the scoring phase or applies scoreboard pressure, Van Veen can occasionally rush his finishing. Still, in a best-of-11 format, his scoring power alone makes him very difficult to contain if he gets first throw and holds cleanly.

Connor Scutt

Connor Scutt is one of the most technically reliable players outside the elite tier. His action is compact, repeatable and built for consistency. I’ve followed his numbers closely on the ProTour, and his baseline average rarely drops below the mid-90s in competitive matches.

Scutt’s biggest asset is his doubling. He’s frequently operating above the 40% mark in shorter matches, which is a major weapon in this format. He’s particularly strong on combination finishes — 96, 100 and 110 routes — and that gives him an edge when legs become scrappy.

Where Scutt sometimes struggles is matching pure scoring bursts. Against heavy hitters, he can find himself under pressure if he’s not landing enough 140s. Against Van Veen, that could be decisive. If he keeps the match structured and forces Gian into checkouts under pressure, he’s firmly in contention. But if it turns into a straight scoring shoot-out, Scutt may need to overperform on the outer ring to stay level.

Odds 53/100

Both players are strong holders of throw and generally consistent in these shorter formats. I don’t see a scenario where either dominates 6-1 or 6-2 without resistance. With their scoring profiles, a 6-3 minimum feels very likely, and 6-4 or 6-5 wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Gian van Veen to win 6-4

Odds 12/5

My lean is towards Van Veen, mainly due to his heavier scoring phase. If he produces a 100+ first-nine average and limits missed doubles early, I can see him nicking a single break and holding from there. A 6-4 scoreline fits the matchup perfectly in my view — competitive, high quality, but with Van Veen’s scoring edge proving decisive.
