Tyler Fletcher replaces Billy Gilmour in Scotland's World Cup squad

The Manchester United teenager will replace the injured Napoli midfielder in Steve Clarke’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Scotland have confirmed Tyler Fletcher as Billy Gilmour’s replacement for the 2026 World Cup after the Napoli midfielder was ruled out of the upcoming tournament due to an injury picked up in their most recent friendly.

The news represents a major blow for Steve Clarke‘s side just days before the tournament begins. Gilmour has become one of Scotland’s most influential players in recent years and was expected to play a central role in the nation’s first World Cup campaign since 1998.

“After picking up an injury during Scotland’s friendly match against Curacao, Billy Gilmour underwent diagnostic tests which revealed a Grade II knee sprain,” Napoli announced on their official website.

“Sadly, the midfielder will not be able to take part in the World Cup. We’re right behind you Billy, wishing you a speedy recovery!”

That left Clarke with the task of selecting a replacement, and the Scotland manager has turned to one of the country’s brightest young talents.

“I am devastated for Billy because he has been an integral part of our World Cup qualifying campaign,” said Clarke.

“The timing of this injury is so, so cruel and we all feel for him. He knows what we all think of him as a footballer and a person and while no words will give him any comfort, I am certain Billy will have many major tournaments ahead of him in the future.”

Fletcher’s rapid rise continues

The Manchester United midfielder has been added to the squad after making his senior international debut in Saturday’s 4-1 win at Hampden Park.

The 19-year-old came on as a half-time substitute and impressed during his first appearance for the national team, having spent recent weeks training with the senior squad alongside several emerging prospects.

Scotland confirmed the decision through the national team’s official social media channels.

“Following the news of Billy Gilmour’s injury we can confirm that 19-year-old Tyler Fletcher has been added to our FIFA World Cup squad after making his debut against Curaçao yesterday,” they wrote. “Welcome aboard, Tyler.”

The midfielder, son of former Scotland captain and Manchester United star Darren Fletcher, has progressed through the ranks at Old Trafford and is regarded as one of the club’s most promising academy graduates.

Remarkably, his 45-minute appearance against Curaçao means he has already played more senior football for Scotland than he has for Manchester United’s first team.
