England World Cup 2026 squad numbers and Thomas Tuchel lineup clues
Several shirt allocations hint at England's likely starters.

FIFA’s published squad numbers appear to provide an early indication of how England could line up in the upcoming tournament

England’s squad numbers for the 2026 World Cup have been confirmed, and while shirt allocations do not always reveal a coach’s plans, Thomas Tuchel‘s selections appear to offer several intriguing hints about his preferred starting line-up.

The Three Lions head into the tournament among the favourites to challenge for the trophy as they look to end their long wait for World Cup glory.

With FIFA publishing the squad numbers ahead of the tournament, attention has quickly turned to what the allocations might reveal about Tuchel’s thinking.

Jordan Pickford, who is expected to start in goal, has been handed the No. 1 shirt, while Ezri Konsa has received the No. 2 shirt and Nico O’Reilly has been assigned No. 3 – the numbers traditionally belonging to starting full-backs.

Meanwhile, Chelsea captain Reece James has been allocated No. 24 – the number throughout much of his club career – despite being widely tipped to start at right-back.

At the back, John Stones has received No. 5 despite enduring an injury-disrupted period at club level. Tuchel may partner him with Marc Guéhi, who takes the No. 6 shirt and has become a regular fixture in England’s defence.

Midfield and attack selections begin to emerge

The midfield numbers offer further clues, as Declan Rice has received the No. 4 shirt, while Elliot Anderson will wear No. 8, with both being expected to play significant roles in England’s midfield and could form Tuchel’s preferred partnership in the centre of the pitch.

Up front, there are few surprises, as captain Harry Kane takes the iconic No. 9 shirt, while Bukayo Saka will wear No. 7 as England’s likely starting right winger.

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford has been handed No. 11, potentially placing him ahead of Anthony Gordon, who will wear No. 18, in the race for a starting berth on the left wing.

The most revealing allocations may concern three players competing for key positions, as Jude Bellingham has been handed the No. 10 shirt, traditionally reserved for a team’s chief playmaker.

With Morgan Rogers wearing No. 17 and Eberechi Eze assigned No. 21, the numbers could indicate that Bellingham is currently ahead of both rivals in the battle for the attacking midfield role.
