Gallagher PREM 2026/27: Opening Fixtures, Format and Teams

gallagher premiership with Northampton, Bath, Leicester and Saracens flags waving behind them.

Fresh shirts, old grudges and a champion with everybody watching: Prem Rugby 2026/27 begins on Friday 25 September. Northampton start their title defence against Newcastle Red Bulls, while Harlequins host Bath across the same evening. The opening Prem Rugby fixtures offer an immediate test of summer promises, but the season’s bigger change concerns how clubs enter England’s top division.

Opening weekend: five games to follow

The first round brings every club into action across three days. All times below are BST; check final broadcast listings before travelling.

FixtureDate and kick-off
Northampton Saints v Newcastle Red BullsFriday 25 September, 19:45
Harlequins v Bath RugbyFriday 25 September, 19:45
Exeter Chiefs v Gloucester RugbySaturday 26 September, afternoon
Sale Sharks v Bristol BearsSaturday 26 September, 17:30
Leicester Tigers v SaracensSunday 27 September, 15:00

Northampton beat Exeter 26-17 in last season’s final, setting Newcastle a demanding opening test.

Leicester against Saracens is the weekend’s other obvious reference point. Watch the breakdown and kicking exchanges before drawing conclusions from the final score alone: early-season cohesion can matter as much as individual quality.

TNT Sports and its HBO Max service carry UK coverage. The opening fixture listing places Harlequins against Bath on HBO Max, so a television channel subscription should not be assumed to cover every viewing option identically.

Ten Gallagher PREM teams, eighteen league games

The clubs are Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Gloucester, Harlequins, Leicester, Newcastle Red Bulls, Northampton, Sale and Saracens. Each plays the other nine home and away, producing 18 league fixtures per team. The regular-season schedule finishes on 5 June 2027, before the knockout rounds.

How bonus points work

League points reward results and specific scoring achievements:

  • Win: four points.
  • Draw: two points.
  • Score four or more tries: one bonus point.
  • Lose by seven points or fewer: one bonus point.

Both bonuses can be collected in the same defeat. A losing side can therefore leave with two points, a distinction worth remembering when comparing table positions with simple win records.

The route to the final

The top four qualify for the play-offs. First hosts fourth and second hosts third, giving the leading pair a home semi-final.

The final is scheduled for 19 June 2027 at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham. Finishing first provides a favourable route; it does not award the championship.

Winning the league table earns an advantage. Winning the final earns the title.

October’s derby weekend and the Christmas programme offer useful calendar markers. Harlequins host Northampton in Big Game on Monday 28 December, moving that showcase beyond its usual weekend setting.

Odds: the opening weekend shortlist

Leicester-Saracens offers the closer contest; Bath bring the shorter price against Harlequins. These are editorial estimates, not verified bookmaker quotes, for the match-result markets.

SelectionOdds
Leicester to beat Saracens8/11
Saracens to beat Leicester6/5
Leicester v Saracens, draw18/1
Bath to beat Harlequins1/4

At 8/11, an £11 winning stake earns £8 profit. Bath’s 1/4 returns only £2.50 profit from £10: a short price still needs justification.

What changes under the franchise model?

Automatic promotion and relegation have been removed as English rugby moves towards franchise-based entry. Expansion is intended to take the competition to 12 clubs by 2029/30, rather than adding two immediately. Assessments extend beyond results to facilities, finances and development commitments. Newcastle’s new identity belongs to that changing landscape, but investment alone cannot settle Friday’s contest. 18+. Bet within your means.

Leicester against Saracens is the opener I’d circle. Give me a proper contest over a short-priced favourite any day.
