Why Does the NFL Play in London?

The NFL plays in London to build its audience beyond the United States, giving British supporters regular-season football with genuine consequences. NFL international games turn television followers into stadium regulars and give franchises a foothold overseas. Wembley and Tottenham are established homes for that strategy, with three London fixtures scheduled in October 2026.
Why did the NFL choose London?
London offers large stadiums, an established fanbase and a convenient gateway for supporters travelling from across Europe. The International Series began at Wembley on 28 October 2007, when the New York Giants beat the Miami Dolphins 13-10.
A game that affects the standings gives the visit substance. Players are pursuing playoff places, coaches cannot treat the afternoon as an exhibition, and a British audience gets the same competitive product watched in America.
Why are there three NFL London games?
For three October Sundays, London swaps its usual football soundtrack for helmets, touchdown celebrations and supporters wearing shirts from every corner of the NFL. The arrangement combines two Tottenham dates with Jacksonville’s Wembley fixture.
| Date | Fixture | Stadium |
|---|---|---|
| 4 October | Colts v Commanders | Tottenham |
| 11 October | Eagles v Jaguars | Tottenham |
| 18 October | Texans v Jaguars | Wembley |
All three start at 2.30pm BST. Tottenham’s agreement provides for at least two regular-season games annually through the 2029/30 NFL season. Wembley adds the Jaguars’ separate London commitment. Three is the current allocation, rather than a rule requiring London to stage exactly that number forever.
How do Wembley and Tottenham differ?
Wembley launched London’s regular-season story and remains Jacksonville’s familiar setting. Tottenham was built with American football in mind, including dedicated NFL changing rooms and an artificial playing surface beneath its retractable football pitch.
NFL games at Tottenham benefit from facilities built for both sports. Visiting teams get dedicated spaces, and the separate playing surface lets American football fit around the club’s football calendar. Jaguars owner Shad Khan described the attraction neatly:
Which NFL team is home in London?
Washington are the designated home team against Indianapolis in 2026. Jacksonville have that designation against both Philadelphia and Houston. The fixture counts towards that franchise’s scheduled home games, even though it is played overseas.
The distinction matters when reading fixtures and betting markets. A home label identifies the official host; it does not recreate a team’s American stadium, familiar travel routine or usual crowd advantage.
For supporters, the distinction is practical: Tottenham offers two dates, while Wembley provides a different stadium experience. Check the opponent, kick-off and venue together before buying travel, because a generic London ticket search can mix all three fixtures.
