Umar Nurmagomedov arrives in Shanghai as one of the leading contenders in the UFC bantamweight division. The 30-year-old Dagestani is a cousin of former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, but his performances inside the Octagon have allowed him to establish his own reputation.
Nurmagomedov has won 20 of his 21 professional fights. Eleven victories have gone to the judges’ scorecards, while seven have come by submission and two by KO or TKO.
Merab Dvalishvili remains the only fighter to defeat him. Nurmagomedov started their 2025 title contest well, but Dvalishvili gradually took control with his relentless pressure and exceptional pace. The Russian responded by earning unanimous-decision wins over Mario Bautista and Deiveson Figueiredo, restoring his position among the division’s main title challengers.
His wrestling is built around persistence and variety. Stopping the first takedown attempt does not necessarily end the danger, as Nurmagomedov can immediately move into a body lock, attack with a trip or force his opponent against the fence. Song Yadong may only be 28, but he has already been competing professionally for more than a decade. The Chinese fighter made his UFC debut in 2017 and has faced a long list of established bantamweight contenders.
His professional record stands at 23 wins, nine defeats, one draw and one no contest. Song has recorded nine victories by KO or TKO, four by submission and ten on the scorecards. He returns after submitting Deiveson Figueiredo with a second-round guillotine in May. That performance was particularly significant because Song has traditionally been known for his striking rather than his submission game.
His recent results have been mixed at the highest level. Song lost decisions to Petr Yan and Sean O’Malley but defeated Henry Cejudo, Chris Gutiérrez and Ricky Simon. Earlier in his UFC career, he also recorded victories over Marlon Vera and Marlon Moraes.

Song produces slightly more significant offence per minute, but Nurmagomedov is considerably harder to hit. The Russian also holds the obvious advantage in wrestling volume and has a two-inch reach advantage despite both fighters being the same height.

Can Song stop the second and third takedown attempts?
Song’s 73% takedown defence is encouraging, but this matchup is not simply about stopping one clean shot. Nurmagomedov frequently continues into another attack after the initial entry has been defended.
