UFC Shanghai: Umar Nurmagomedov vs Song Yadong Preview and Prediction

Nurmagomedov and Yadong face off UFC Shanghai.

Umar Nurmagomedov and Song Yadong meet in a pivotal bantamweight main event at UFC Fight Night Shanghai on Saturday, 29 August 2026. The five-round contest takes place at the Oriental Sports Center and could have a major influence on the next UFC title fight at 135lb. The latest official UFC rankings place Nurmagomedov at No.2 and Song at No.6. The Russian has already challenged for the belt, while a home victory over a former title contender would be the biggest result of Song’s career.

This fight was originally expected to take place in December 2024 before Song withdrew through injury. They now meet almost two years later with both men established near the top of one of the UFC’s strongest divisions. Umar Nurmagomedov: an elite grappler with an underrated striking game

Umar Nurmagomedov arrives in Shanghai as one of the leading contenders in the UFC bantamweight division. The 30-year-old Dagestani is a cousin of former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, but his performances inside the Octagon have allowed him to establish his own reputation.

Nurmagomedov has won 20 of his 21 professional fights. Eleven victories have gone to the judges’ scorecards, while seven have come by submission and two by KO or TKO.

Merab Dvalishvili remains the only fighter to defeat him. Nurmagomedov started their 2025 title contest well, but Dvalishvili gradually took control with his relentless pressure and exceptional pace. The Russian responded by earning unanimous-decision wins over Mario Bautista and Deiveson Figueiredo, restoring his position among the division’s main title challengers.

His wrestling is built around persistence and variety. Stopping the first takedown attempt does not necessarily end the danger, as Nurmagomedov can immediately move into a body lock, attack with a trip or force his opponent against the fence. These extended sequences allow him to wear fighters down before establishing control on the ground.

Nurmagomedov is also comfortable operating at range. His front kicks and attacks to the body help him manage distance, while the constant threat of a level change makes opponents more cautious when advancing. By combining both areas, he can create takedown opportunities without relying on obvious entries.

The numbers underline his efficiency. According to UFC Stats, Nurmagomedov connects with 56% of his significant strikes and absorbs only 1.86 per minute. He also completes an average of 4.03 takedowns per 15 minutes.

Song Yadong: power, experience and home support

Song Yadong may only be 28, but he has already been competing professionally for more than a decade. The Chinese fighter made his UFC debut in 2017 and has faced a long list of established bantamweight contenders.

His professional record stands at 23 wins, nine defeats, one draw and one no contest. Song has recorded nine victories by KO or TKO, four by submission and ten on the scorecards. He returns after submitting Deiveson Figueiredo with a second-round guillotine in May. That performance was particularly significant because Song has traditionally been known for his striking rather than his submission game.

His recent results have been mixed at the highest level. Song lost decisions to Petr Yan and Sean O’Malley but defeated Henry Cejudo, Chris Gutiérrez and Ricky Simon. Earlier in his UFC career, he also recorded victories over Marlon Vera and Marlon Moraes.

Song is a compact and powerful striker with a background in sanda. He is at his best when he can establish his feet, close the distance and throw fast combinations. His right hand, uppercuts and short counters could all cause problems if Nurmagomedov becomes predictable with his entries.

He also defends approximately 73% of the takedowns attempted against him, according to UFC Stats. He has never been submitted as a professional, while his only UFC stoppage defeat came when a doctor ended his fight against Cory Sandhagen because of a cut.

Song produces slightly more significant offence per minute, but Nurmagomedov is considerably harder to hit. The Russian also holds the obvious advantage in wrestling volume and has a two-inch reach advantage despite both fighters being the same height.

The key tactical battles

Can Song stop the second and third takedown attempts?

Song’s 73% takedown defence is encouraging, but this matchup is not simply about stopping one clean shot. Nurmagomedov frequently continues into another attack after the initial entry has been defended. He can switch to a body lock, force his opponent towards the fence or attack a trip while the other fighter is still trying to regain balance.

Song may successfully defend several takedowns and still spend long periods pinned against the cage. Breaking away quickly and returning to the centre will be just as important as avoiding the initial attack.

Song must punish the entries

Song’s clearest route to victory is to make Nurmagomedov pay whenever he closes the distance. Straight punches, uppercuts and knees could discourage the Russian from entering too freely.

There is still a difficult balance to find. If Song becomes overly aggressive, he could step directly into a takedown. If he waits for too long, Nurmagomedov can control the range with kicks and win quieter rounds without taking significant damage.

Song needs to apply pressure without chasing. He will have more opportunities if he can keep the fight in open space and prevent Nurmagomedov from dictating the position of every exchange.

Cage position could decide the fight

Nurmagomedov does not need to dominate every minute on the ground. Clinch control, mat returns and repeated takedown attempts can reduce Song’s offence while creating a strong impression with the judges. Song must avoid retreating in a straight line. Once his back reaches the fence, Nurmagomedov can combine wrestling attacks without having to cover as much distance.

The Chinese fighter’s best work is likely to come near the centre of the Octagon, where he has room to move, counter and reset after his combinations.

What happens in the championship rounds?

Both fighters have previously completed five-round contests. Song has shown that he can remain dangerous late, while Nurmagomedov has gone the distance against Cory Sandhagen and Dvalishvili.

The loss to Dvalishvili exposed some questions about Nurmagomedov’s ability to deal with relentless pressure over 25 minutes. Song, however, does not reproduce the Georgian’s wrestling volume or constant forward movement. Nurmagomedov should be able to manage his energy more efficiently in this matchup by alternating between kicks, clinches and takedowns rather than fighting at an exhausting pace throughout.

Song is extremely difficult to finish

A submission is always possible when Nurmagomedov reaches the back, but Song has never lost in that manner. His experience, physical strength and defensive awareness make him a difficult opponent to remove before the final horn. That durability makes a decision more likely than a stoppage, even if Nurmagomedov establishes a clear advantage over the five rounds.

Nurmagomedov vs Song prediction

Main prediction: Umar Nurmagomedov to win by decision: 10/17

We expect the opening rounds to be the most competitive part of the fight. Song’s speed and power give him a genuine chance of punishing Nurmagomedov’s entries, while his takedown defence should help him avoid being controlled immediately.

The challenge for Song is maintaining those conditions for 25 minutes. Nurmagomedov can change the nature of the contest from one exchange to the next, moving between kicks at range, clinch pressure, takedowns and ground control. This variety should allow him to reduce Song’s attacking output and gradually take command of the fight.

Song is likely to become less explosive as he is forced to defend repeated wrestling sequences. That could give Nurmagomedov longer periods of control during the later rounds and potentially create an opportunity to attack the back. A late submission cannot be dismissed, although Song has never been submitted and has repeatedly shown that he can survive difficult positions.
