Why Is There No Sprint at the 2026 United States Grand Prix?

The US Grand Prix 2026 sprint is missing from Austin’s schedule because Circuit of The Americas was not selected for one of Formula 1’s six Sprint weekends. After hosting the short race in 2023, 2024 and 2025, Texas returns to the standard format from 23 to 25 October: three practice sessions, one qualifying session and Sunday’s Grand Prix. There has been no cancellation at the circuit.
Why Has Austin Lost Its Sprint Weekend?
Formula 1 and the FIA announced their six Sprint locations for 2026 in September 2025. China, Miami, Canada, Britain, the Netherlands and Singapore made the list. Austin did not, despite its recent run of Saturday races.
Organisers have not published an Austin-specific reason. The calendar introduces three first-time Sprint hosts and restores the format to Silverstone. Describing that selection as a punishment, a safety issue or a demand from drivers would go beyond the evidence.
United States Grand Prix 2026 UK Schedule
The upside for engineers is more time to untangle a tricky circuit. Friday brings two hours of running, Saturday another before qualifying, and Sunday the 56-lap race.
| Session | Date | UK time |
|---|---|---|
| Practice 1 | Fri 23 Oct | 18:30 BST |
| Practice 2 | Fri 23 Oct | 22:00 BST |
| Practice 3 | Sat 24 Oct | 18:30 BST |
| Qualifying | Sat 24 Oct | 22:00 BST |
| Race | Sun 25 Oct | 20:00 GMT |
Britain’s clocks go back on Sunday morning. That is why the race begins at 20:00 GMT even though the Austin start remains 15:00 local time. Sky Sports F1 carries live UK coverage, with highlights available on Channel 4.
How Does a Normal F1 Weekend Change the Racing?
A Sprint meeting gives teams just one free practice before competitive sessions. Austin’s traditional timetable restores two additional hours to refine tyres, suspension and aerodynamic balance ahead of qualifying.
That matters around the steep climb to Turn 1, the fast direction changes early in the lap and the long back straight. A setup that looks quick over one lap may punish tyres over a race stint. More running offers answers, although it cannot guarantee predictability. Nor should punters confuse the absence of a Sprint with fewer championship points on Sunday. The usual Grand Prix points remain available, while no additional Sprint points are awarded in Austin.
United States Grand Prix Betting Odds
The headline contest is still the Grand Prix, not an extra 100km dash. These race-winner prices were visible in pre-weekend markets on 21 October; check for changes before placing a bet.
What Is the Smartest Way to Approach Austin?
No Sprint means no Saturday points race, but it gives teams a fuller picture of their machinery before the lights go out. That makes the practice long runs worth watching, not just the fastest single lap.
Wait for qualifying before judging the winner market. Austin has enough corners, tyre stress and strategy choices to make an impulsive Friday bet look very expensive by Sunday, even for a driver arriving with strong momentum and genuine qualifying pace.
