The World Cup round of 32 throws a giant clash between the Netherlands and Morocco

Preview, team news, head-to-head, probable line-ups and where to watch Netherlands vs Morocco in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup

The Netherlands and Morocco meet in Monterrey on Monday in one of the standout ties of the World Cup Round of 32.

Ronald Koeman‘s side reached the knockout stage as winners of Group F, collecting seven points from their three matches. The Dutch opened with a 2-2 draw against Japan, then produced a statement 5-1 win over Sweden before sealing top spot with a 3-1 victory against Tunisia.

Morocco also arrive with confidence after finishing second in Group C behind Brazil. The Atlas Lions drew 1-1 with Brazil, beat Scotland 1-0 and then came from behind twice to defeat Haiti 4-2 in their final group match.

Both teams reached the latter stages in Qatar four years ago, with Morocco making history by becoming the first African side to reach a World Cup semi-final. Now they face a Netherlands team that has found rhythm at exactly the right time.

Latest news: absences, form, team news

The Netherlands have been one of the most entertaining teams of the tournament so far. They have scored 10 goals in three matches, but Koeman has also admitted there is room for improvement defensively after his side conceded in every group game. Brian Brobbey strengthened his case for a starting place by scoring again against Tunisia, while Jan Paul van Hecke also got on the scoresheet.

Morocco’s final group match was far from straightforward, but their 4-2 win over Haiti showed character and attacking depth. Achraf Hakimi and Ismael Saibari both scored equalisers before substitutes Soufiane Rahimi and Gessime Yassine sealed the victory.

Netherlands

Koeman is expected to stay close to the side that finished the group stage strongly. Bart Verbruggen should continue in goal, with Virgil van Dijk leading the defence. Frenkie de Jong remains the key figure in midfield, dictating tempo and helping the Netherlands play through pressure. In attack, Cody Gakpo is likely to be one of the main threats from the left, while Brobbey is set to start upfront. For the time being, there are no reported injuries in the Dutch training camp.

Morocco

Mohamed Ouahbi has built on Morocco’s 2022 momentum and has made the team more adventurous without losing their defensive identity. Hakimi remains one of Morocco’s most important players, both defensively and going forward. Sofyan Amrabat gives the side structure in midfield, while Saibari has become one of the stories of their tournament after scoring in each of Morocco’s three group games. Ouahbi should have a fully-fit squad to choose from in this duel.

Tactical analysis: Can Morocco slow down the Dutch attack?

The Netherlands have looked dangerous because of their variety, while Morocco will not want the game to become too open. Ouahbi’s side are at their best when they stay compact, force opponents wide and then break quickly through Hakimi, Brahim Díaz and Bilal El Khannouss.

The midfield battle could be decisive. If Frenkie de Jong is allowed to control possession, the Netherlands should create chances. If Amrabat can disrupt his rhythm and protect the Moroccan back line, the Atlas Lions have the discipline to frustrate the Dutch.

Key players to watch

Cody Gakpo (Netherlands)

Gakpo remains one of the Netherlands’ most reliable tournament players. His movement from the left, ability to arrive in central positions and calm finishing make him a constant threat in knockout football. Morocco’s defence will be far harder to break down than Tunisia’s, but Gakpo’s intelligence without the ball could help him find space between Hakimi and the centre-backs. Backing Gakpo to score first vs Morocco could be tempting given how quickly the Netherlands started against Tunisia, but recording a goal or an assist during the game could also be an option.

Achraf Hakimi (Morocco)

Hakimi is central to almost everything Morocco do well. Defensively, he will have to manage Gakpo’s movement. Going forward, he remains one of the best attacking full-backs in world football and already scored in the win over Haiti. His energy down the right could give Morocco their best route to goal, especially if the Netherlands leave space behind their left side. Hakimi to register an assist looks more appealing than backing him to score.

Market insights and betting tips

The Netherlands enter as favourites according to World Cup betting experts, after topping Group F and scoring 10 goals in three matches. Current markets imply approximately a 58% chance of a Dutch win inside 90 minutes, compared to around 19% for Morocco, while the draw is rated at roughly 23%. The goals market points towards a competitive but open tie. Over 2.5 goals is priced at around 56%, while both teams to score sits close to 53%.

Morocco have the organisation, athleticism and counter-attacking quality to make this difficult, but the Netherlands have built real momentum and look dangerous in several attacking areas. Expect a game that could even go to penalties – surely one that will be decided by fine margins.
