Bayern Munich host Arsenal at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday 21 October, with kick-off at 8pm BST. Vincent Kompany’s side arrive after thrashing RB Leipzig 6-1, although recent defensive problems have raised questions about their consistency.

Arsenal have won both opening Champions League matches without conceding, including an impressive away victory against Napoli. Mikel Arteta’s team have shown greater defensive discipline, but Bayern’s remarkable attacking form makes this a difficult assignment. With Harry Kane and Luis Díaz in excellent form, I expect both teams to create opportunities. The goals markets look more appealing than choosing an outright winner.

Bayern Munich vs Arsenal: match preview

Bayern opened their Champions League campaign with a commanding 5-0 victory over Bodø/Glimt before drawing 3-3 away to Viking. Their latest Bundesliga performance was even more impressive, beating Leipzig 6-1 with Díaz scoring a hat-trick.

However, Kompany’s side have conceded six goals across their last three matches, including two against Augsburg and three against Viking. Their attacking quality is undeniable, but defensive mistakes remain a concern. Arsenal have made a perfect European start, beating Napoli 1-0 away and Lille 3-0 at the Emirates. Their latest Premier League victory was less convincing, with Noni Madueke’s deflected strike securing a narrow 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

The Gunners have demonstrated their ability to win difficult matches, although creating chances remains an occasional problem. Bayern are priced at 23/20 to win, with Arsenal at 19/10 and the draw at 14/5. The close match-winner prices reflect how competitive this fixture should be.

Recent form and key results

Bayern MunichBayern 6-1 RB Leipzig; Viking 3-3 Bayern; Augsburg 2-2 Bayern; Bayern 7-0 Union Berlin; Bayern 5-0 Bodø/Glimt
ArsenalNottingham Forest 0-1 Arsenal; Arsenal 3-0 Lille; Arsenal 2-1 Leeds; Brighton 3-0 Arsenal; Ipswich 2-4 Arsenal

Bayern have scored 23 goals across these five fixtures, winning three and drawing twice. Their attacking numbers are exceptional, with Kane and Díaz providing consistent scoring threats. However, conceding six goals during that period highlights the defensive weaknesses Arsenal could exploit.

Arsenal have won four of their last five competitive matches, scoring ten goals and conceding six. Their Champions League record is particularly impressive, with four goals scored and none conceded. The visitors have also demonstrated greater defensive control in recent matches. Their 1-0 victories against Napoli and Nottingham Forest show they can protect narrow leads even when their attacking performances are less convincing.

Team news and the main uncertainty

Bayern will be without Michael Olise, who is suspended following his red card against Viking. His absence removes an important creative outlet from Kompany’s attacking system. However, Díaz is in outstanding form after scoring three against Leipzig, while Kane remains the focal point of Bayern’s attack. Aleksandar Pavlović and Joshua Kimmich provide additional control in midfield.

Arsenal have concerns in defence, with William Saliba and Piero Hincapié expected to miss the match. Their absence could become significant against Bayern’s aggressive attacking movement. Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze both scored against Lille, while Madueke’s winner at Nottingham Forest demonstrated Arsenal’s attacking depth. Bayern played on Saturday 17 October, while Arsenal faced Forest on Sunday. That gives Kompany’s side an additional day of recovery before Wednesday’s fixture.

The biggest uncertainty is whether Arsenal’s reshuffled defence can withstand Bayern’s attacking pressure without sacrificing their own forward threat.

Tactical analysis: can Arsenal contain Bayern’s attacking threat?

Bayern’s strongest weapon is their ability to overwhelm opponents through sustained attacking pressure. Their victories against Leipzig, Union Berlin and Bodø/Glimt demonstrated how effectively Kane, Díaz and the supporting midfielders can exploit defensive gaps. Kompany’s side have scored at least twice in each of their last five matches, making them particularly dangerous when opponents allow space between the lines.

Arsenal, however, are considerably more disciplined than several of Bayern’s recent opponents. Arteta’s side have kept clean sheets in both Champions League fixtures and could attempt to slow the tempo through controlled possession. The Gunners also have the attacking quality to punish Bayern’s defensive mistakes. Saka’s movement and Eze’s creativity could become important if Bayern commit too many players forward.

Arsenal won the clubs’ previous meeting 3-1 at the Emirates in November 2025, showing they can exploit Kompany’s aggressive approach.

I expect Bayern to create plenty of chances at home, but Arsenal should have opportunities of their own. Both teams possess enough quality to score, making the total goals market my preferred betting angle.

Bayern Munich vs Arsenal: alternative betting odds

Bayern are narrow favourites, but Arsenal’s defensive organisation makes the outright result difficult to predict. The goals markets offer several interesting alternatives. The following odds are pre-match prices for 21 October 2026. Prices may change before kick-off.

Betting marketOdds
Over 1.5 total goals1/7
Over 2.5 total goals4/7
Over 3.5 total goals31/20
Under 3.5 total goals9/20
Both teams to score – Yes8/15
Both teams to score – No29/20
  • The Over 2.5 goals market at 4/7 is my preferred selection. Bayern have seen at least three goals in each of their last five competitive fixtures, while Arsenal have the attacking quality to punish their defensive mistakes.
  • Both teams to score at 8/15 is another interesting option. Bayern’s attacking record speaks for itself, but Arsenal’s European performances suggest they can find opportunities against stronger opponents.
  • For a bigger return, Over 3.5 goals at 31/20 is worth considering. Bayern’s recent matches have regularly produced high scores, although Arsenal’s defensive discipline makes four or more goals a demanding target.

Over 2.5 Goals

Odds 3/5

I'm backing at least three goals here. Bayern have cleared that line in five straight matches, and Arsenal have done it in four of five. The Gunners' defensive record is the obvious concern, but I fancy Bayern to make this a much more open contest.

Over 3.5 Goals

Odds 31/20

Six against Leipzig, three conceded at Viking. Bayern don't do things quietly at the moment. If Arsenal get dragged into their kind of game, I can see four goals coming. It's a bigger ask, but there's enough attacking quality on both sides to tempt me.
