Tri-Nation Series, 09:00 @ 20.10.2026

Pakistan and England meet at Rawalpindi on Tuesday 20 October in the second match of the 2026 ODI Tri-Nation Series, with play starting at 9am BST. Pakistan opened with a 37-run win over Sri Lanka, while Harry Brook’s England arrive after ODI series victories over India and Sri Lanka.

England’s batting depth makes them favourites, but Pakistan’s fast bowlers have already shown how quickly they can change a match. With only two teams progressing to the final, this first meeting carries plenty of weight. I lean towards England, although Pakistan’s home advantage makes the short price worth questioning.

Pakistan vs England: match preview

Pakistan have already made their mark on the tournament, defending 305 against Sri Lanka at Rawalpindi on Sunday. Salman Ali Agha’s 107 rescued the innings after an uncertain start, before Shaheen Shah Afridi and the pace attack completed a 37-run victory.

England, meanwhile, arrive with four wins from their last five ODIs. Their most recent performance was particularly convincing, scoring 355/7 before dismissing Sri Lanka for 132 at The Oval. Tom Banton, Harry Brook and Jordan Cox were all among the runs, underlining the batting depth available to the visitors.

The contrast makes this an interesting contest. Pakistan have the advantage of already playing at Rawalpindi, while England have enjoyed a longer preparation period since their last ODI on 27 September.

England are priced at 8/15 to win, compared with Pakistan at 6/4. That makes Brook’s side clear favourites, but Pakistan’s new-ball threat means the visitors cannot afford another slow start. The sides meet again in Lahore on 25 October, ahead of the final on 31 October.

Pakistan have won three of their last five ODIs, including a 2-1 series victory over Australia in June. Their latest success against Sri Lanka was built around Salman’s 107 from 90 balls, although the top order struggled. Fakhar Zaman made 16 and Saim Ayub just seven, forcing the middle order to repair the damage.

The bowling was more convincing. Shaheen finished with 3/55, while Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf and Faheem Ashraf claimed two wickets apiece. All ten Sri Lankan wickets fell to Pakistan’s quicks, an encouraging sign ahead of facing England’s aggressive batting line-up.

England have won four of their last five ODIs, with their only defeat coming against Sri Lanka at Headingley. Their 223-run victory in the series decider offered a reminder of their attacking potential. Banton struck 126, Brook added 77 and Cox contributed 76 as England reached 355/7.

The visitors have looked more consistent with the bat, but the two sides have arrived here through different circumstances. Pakistan have recent experience of these conditions, while England must quickly adapt after more than three weeks without an ODI.

Team news and the main uncertainty

England travel without Jos Buttler, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, while Jofra Archer has been rested. Both are significant absences, particularly against a Pakistan side capable of taking early wickets.

The return of Adil Rashid and Sam Curran offers some reassurance. Rashid provides experience and control through the middle overs, while Curran adds another bowling option and useful lower-order batting. Mason Crane, James Coles and Henry Crocombe are also part of the squad, giving England alternatives if they decide to rotate.

Pakistan’s main strength remains their pace attack, with captain Shaheen supported by Naseem, Rauf and Faheem. Babar Azam and Salman provide experience in the batting order, although the opening partnership will need to improve after the early dismissals against Sri Lanka.

The biggest uncertainty is how England’s batting responds to Pakistan’s new ball. Brook’s side have the stronger recent ODI record, but losing two early wickets could leave Root and the middle order facing a very different challenge from the one they enjoyed against Sri Lanka.

The toss and confirmed starting XIs will be important, particularly when assessing the balance between pace and spin.

Tactical analysis: can England survive Pakistan’s new-ball attack?

Pakistan’s best opportunity is to attack England early. Shaheen and Naseem shared five wickets against Sri Lanka, and their ability to find movement with the new ball could disrupt England’s top order before Brook, Root and Banton settle.

England’s response should be built around batting depth rather than an all-out assault in the opening powerplay. Against Sri Lanka, Banton, Brook and Cox contributed a combined 279 runs, showing how difficult England can be to contain once partnerships develop. Root offers a more measured option if early wickets fall, while Jacks can accelerate later in the innings.

Rawalpindi also presents an interesting tactical challenge. Pakistan managed 305 in the tournament opener, but Sri Lanka’s 119-run fifth-wicket partnership showed that rebuilding is possible even after losing early wickets. The pitch offered scoring opportunities, although it would be risky to assume identical conditions on Tuesday.

Pakistan will want wickets inside the first ten overs and tight spells through the middle. England, meanwhile, can call on Rashid’s spin and Curran’s versatility to break partnerships and prevent the hosts from building another substantial total.

I expect a competitive contest rather than a comfortable England victory. Pakistan have the bowling to trouble the favourites, but England’s ability to recover from setbacks makes the straight match winner more appealing than backing a dominant performance.

England to Win

Odds 11/20

England are my pick. Four wins in five ODIs, plenty of batting depth and Brook in charge. Pakistan's quicks worry me, particularly early on, but I trust England to find a way through. I wouldn't chase a shorter price, mind.

Joe Root Top England Runscorer

Odds 3/1

I'm going with Root. If Shaheen makes that new ball talk, I want the bloke who can dig in and build an innings. Banton and Brook might come out swinging, but Root could be the one still batting when it matters.
