Boodles May Festival: analysis and outright winner tips 06.05.2026

The Boodles May Festival at Chester runs from 6 to 8 May 2026, with three days of early-season Flat racing at the Roodee. It is a very different betting puzzle to Newmarket: Chester is tight, turning, tactical and famously draw-sensitive, especially over shorter trips and around the bends.
For a long-range approach, I would focus less on pure ratings and more on horses with course experience, tactical speed and the ability to hold a position. At Chester, a classy horse can easily get trapped wide or stuck behind runners, so Win, Place and Each-Way betting often makes more sense than simply chasing short-priced favourites.
Chester Cup: Spirit Mixer, Blindedbythelights and Puturhandstogether
The race that interests me most from a betting perspective is the Chester Cup, run over 2m2f140y on Friday. This year’s race has attracted a huge entry, with Chester announcing a record 86 entries, which makes draw position and guaranteed participation especially important.
My main long-range horse is Spirit Mixer. He is not the flashiest name in the market, but he is exactly the type I like for Chester: proven at the track, proven over staying trips, and experienced enough to handle the rhythm of this race. He has multiple Chester wins on his record and has been available around 16/1, which makes him a strong Each-Way candidate.
Blindedbythelights heads the market around 7/1, with Puturhandstogether and Galileo Dame also prominent near the top of the betting. They are obvious players, but at their prices I prefer the value angle with Spirit Mixer.
Chester Vase and Cheshire Oaks: Benvenuto Cellini, I’m The One and Amelia Earhart
The Chester Vase is one of the key Derby trials of the meeting, and Benvenuto Cellini sets a strong standard. He has Group-level form, represents Aidan O’Brien, and is partnered with Ryan Moore, which immediately makes him a serious contender at Chester.
That said, I would be careful taking a very short Win price around Chester. Water To Wine and Del Maro offer more interesting Place angles if the race becomes tactical.
In the Cheshire Oaks, I’m The One is the clear filly to beat. She has been strongly supported after an impressive debut and is already being treated as a serious Oaks prospect. Amelia Earhart is the danger, particularly given her strong Irish profile and Aidan O’Brien connection.
