All or nothing. Rapid Vienna and Hearts meet in Austria with their Conference League future on the line. The tie is level at 2-2 after a first leg that was far more balanced than the raw numbers might suggest: Hearts had more attempts, but Rapid controlled more of the ball and actually registered more shots on target.

That is where my betting angle begins. Hearts showed they can hurt Rapid, particularly when the game opens up and spaces appear, but the Austrian side arrive unbeaten this season, have looked strong at home and now get the decisive match in Vienna. From my point of view, Rapid are favourites, although not necessarily to win comfortably.

That run includes a 4-1 away win over Paide, a 2-0 home victory in the return fixture and an emphatic 8-0 win over GAK in the Austrian Bundesliga.

What stands out to me is that their results have not depended on one particular type of game. Rapid have won when dominating possession, but they have also shown patience when matches have remained tight. In Edinburgh, they went ahead through Serge-Philippe Raux-Yao, fell 2-1 behind and still found a response through substitute Nikolaus Wurmbrand. That ability to change a game from the bench could be important in a second leg that may remain tight for more than an hour.

Hearts form

Hearts are harder to dismiss than the odds might suggest. Their last five competitive matches before travelling to Vienna included a 4-0 win over Dundee United, a 1-1 draw with Benfica, a 6-2 cup victory over Inverness and the 2-2 first leg. Their only defeat was that bruising night in Lisbon, where they lost 6-1 to Benfica.

My main concern is the contrast between their home performances and their European away form. Hearts lost 4-0 at Sturm Graz and 6-1 at Benfica on their two continental trips this summer. Vienna is not Lisbon, but Rapid’s aggressive home approach is exactly the sort of test that can expose a side when the gaps between the lines become too large.

Even so, I would not judge Hearts solely on those two defeats. They produced 17 attempts at Tynecastle, while James Wilson made an immediate impact from the bench with an excellent long-range goal.

1. Rapid have a much stronger home platform

Rapid have already won both of their home matches in Conference League qualifying this season. Add the 8-0 league victory over GAK and it is easy to understand why the market has made the Austrian side clear favourites.

2. Hearts’ 17 first-leg shots need context

The 17-9 shot count in Hearts’ favour immediately catches the eye, but the accuracy tells a different story. Rapid put six of their nine attempts on target, while Hearts managed only four shots on target from 17 attempts. Rapid also had 61% possession.

That does not mean Hearts played poorly. It simply means the overall shot count should not be treated as proof that they were clearly the better side.

3. Hearts still have enough to score

This is the main reason I am not drawn towards a big Rapid handicap.

Hearts have scored in each of their last five competitive matches, including against Benfica and Rapid. The Austrian side, meanwhile, conceded twice in Edinburgh and also allowed goals away to Ried and Paide during their recent run.

If Rapid push higher up the pitch at home, Hearts should find opportunities on the counter. That could become particularly interesting for a higher-priced bet.

4. The tie is completely open

A 2-2 first leg creates a very different tactical situation from a tie in which one side is protecting a two-goal advantage. Neither team can simply sit back and manage the aggregate score.

I therefore expect a relatively controlled opening, followed by a much more stretched second half if the score remains level.

5. The market makes Rapid clear favourites — and that makes sense

I agree with the direction of the market. Home advantage, their unbeaten start to the season and Hearts’ problems in their two European away matches justify Rapid’s favouritism. I just would not price this as though Hearts have no chance of making it competitive.

The numbers explain why I am leaning towards Rapid, but also why I do not want to make this prediction too simplistic. Rapid’s recent scoring output is clearly stronger and their domestic start has been excellent, although Hearts created plenty in Edinburgh.

The other major contrast is the venue. Rapid have scored eight goals across their two Conference League home qualifiers, while Hearts’ two European away matches this summer ended in heavy defeats at Sturm Graz and Benfica.
