Bournemouth go into this match with a knife between their teeth, as they are right in the thick of the battle for European places (with a genuine chance of Champions League football), whilst City are under immense pressure in the title race. In the table, the gap is clear, but the context is not quite so straightforward.

The key for me lies in the tempo: Iraola presses high, forces turnovers and turns the match into a slugfest… and that, against City, could prove extremely costly or could result in a more open contest than people imagine. Furthermore, the head-to-head record heavily favours Guardiola, but Bournemouth are in a period of immense confidence.

Bournemouth

Throughout the season we have seen a fairly capable Bournemouth side, characterised by their ability to cope well with pressure, quick transitions and a lot of pressure down the flanks. It is no coincidence that they are battling at the top of the table with their goals-for and goals-against figures: they create plenty in attack, but they also leave spaces and concede chances, which often leads to end-to-end affairs.

In recent form, they’ve been very serious: they’ve strung together several positive results and, most importantly, they look competitive in big games. That sort of away win at this stage of the season says a lot about the team’s character. It’s not down to luck: they stick to the plan, compete and don’t crumble when the game gets messy.

That said, it remains to be seen how they cope with injuries and rotations in midfield. If they maintain their aggression without overdoing it, they can cause damage… but if they concede two or three clean transitions, City will punish you mercilessly.

Manchester City

City arrive with the stats of a title contender: a huge number of goals scored and a defence that concedes very little given the volume of matches they dominate. In other words, the game Guardiola wants is the usual one: long-term control, wearing the opposition down through sustained pressure and minimising chaos. And the league table situation is crystal clear: they need to win to keep their title hopes alive until the final matchday.

In terms of recent results, they’re also in fine form: they’re winning matches even when they don’t shine, which is precisely what sets a serious contender apart. What interests me here is the ā€˜energy’ factor: Bournemouth tend to take this sort of fixture to an uncomfortable pace, and Guardiola has already hinted more than once that away trips like this become incredibly tough due to the opposition’s intensity.

In terms of the squad, if City turn up with their first-choice eleven available, the difference in quality when it comes to the finer details is huge: a one-two, a second-ball situation, a run behind the defence… and the match changes. Furthermore, the historical head-to-head record carries weight: if City take an early lead, Bournemouth may reach that point of anxiety that opens up spaces.

Referee: Anthony Taylor

Taylor usually lets the game flow, but he isn’t exactly ā€˜soft’ on cards when the match breaks down: generally, he’s the sort of referee who maintains the tempo, and if the game descends into transitions and tactical fouls, that’s when he starts showing yellow cards fairly regularly.

With Bournemouth pressing so intensely and City also cutting out counter-attacks when necessary, I foresee a ā€˜heated match’ scenario here if there’s an early goal or if the score is tight in the closing stages. If the game breaks down, cards tend to appear almost by default.

Odds 11/25

Bournemouth are a team that don’t play it safe: they attack with numbers and take risks, and that gives them chances to score, but it also leaves them exposed. And City, thanks to their firepower and volume of attacks, are capable of scoring 2-3 goals in the blink of an eye if they find space and have a clinical Haaland in front of goal alongside the magic of Cherki, Doku and Semenyo.

Odds 7/2

Bournemouth are full of confidence, usually compete very well at home and their pressing game could cause City problems. Furthermore, when a big side ā€˜has to’ win, they sometimes get anxious, especially if the minutes tick by and they haven’t broken the deadlock. The odds for a draw are high and, in a clash where Bournemouth can hold their own and City might rotate their squad or manage the game, it doesn’t seem like a bad option to me.
