There’s no place at the World Cup at stake here, but it is a test of form. Brazil and Croatia face off on Tuesday 31 March in Orlando in a friendly ahead of the World Cup, and to me it looks like one of those matches that says far more than it appears to. Brazil are reeling after a 2-1 defeat to France, whilst Croatia arrive in better spirits after coming from behind to beat Colombia 2-1.

What interests me most about this clash is the contrast in styles and emotional momentum. Brazil have more explosiveness and the talent to break the deadlock with a burst of pace, but Croatia remain a tremendously difficult side to play against when they manage to slow the game down and take it into more tactical territory. In a friendly of this calibre, it is often less about the shirt and more about who understands the rhythm of the game better.

Brazil

Brazil arrive needing to provide an answer. The defeat to France yielded some positives, but it also reignited the noise surrounding the team. Chants calling for Neymar have resurfaced, something that reflects quite well the high expectations that continue to surround the national side. I get the feeling that the problem wasn’t just the result, but that Brazil are still searching for a truly consistent form in these big matches.

Even so, there is plenty of talent to compete with. Vinicius remains the standout player and arrives full of confidence following his performances at Real Madrid. Furthermore, Ancelotti has sought to broaden the range of attacking options: Endrick has returned to the squad and Igor Thiago has also been called up, aiming to add depth to the squad ahead of the World Cup. I think that’s important, because Brazil has quality in abundance, but is still fine-tuning the line-up and pecking order in certain areas of the pitch.

As for absentees, there are several key names missing. Alisson is out injured and has been replaced by Hugo Souza. Neymar remains absent whilst he finishes regaining his fitness, and there are also doubts over Raphinha, who picked up a knock against France. All of this does not rule out Brazil being favourites, but I do think it’s a relevant detail: the team has talent, though it isn’t arriving with its full potential available.

Croatia

Croatia arrive with their characteristic profile: less fanfare, but plenty of reliability. Against Colombia, they went behind but ended up winning 2-1, coming from behind with goals from Luka VuÅ”ković and Igor Matanović. It wasn’t a brilliant match, but it was very representative of what this team is all about: organisation, patience and the ability to compete right until the end.

They remain a team with a strong tactical culture. Although the generation has changed, they retain that identity of a solid unit, difficult to break down and very intelligent in managing the flow of the match. For me, they are exactly the kind of opponent who can unsettle Brazil if they manage to slow the game down and make it less chaotic.

That said, they’re not a perfect team either. When forced to retreat or when the game breaks down, they struggle more than they did a few years ago. And that’s where Brazil can cause damage, because they have players who thrive in precisely those situations. If Croatia fail to control the tempo, they could find themselves overwhelmed by their opponents’ pace and talent.

My predictions for Brazil vs Croatia

Brazil win

Odds 4/5

Brazil have more individual quality, a greater ability to create chances without needing to completely dominate the match, and they’re also coming into this with a certain urgency to improve their form following the defeat to France. I don’t expect a comfortable match, but I do think it’s more likely to go their way.

Over 2.5 goals

Odds 17/20

It fits the context quite well. Both teams are coming off games with goals, and although Croatia will try to slow the pace, friendlies tend to open up as the minutes tick by, especially with substitutions and tactical adjustments. I also like ā€˜both teams to score’ as an alternative, as I don’t see Croatia completely abandoning attack, nor Brazil keeping a clean sheet given the doubts in their defence.
My predicted score is 2-1 to Brazil. I expect a closely contested match for long stretches, but with Brazilian talent making the difference at key moments.
