Brazil and Japan face off in one of the ‘tricky’ fixtures of the round of 16. The Brazilians go into the match as group winners and favourites to progress, but they’ll be up against a Japanese side that has once again shown it knows how to compete in this type of tournament and rarely makes things easy for their opponents.

We invite you to read our preview of the Brazil v Japan round of 16 match to find out all the key details about this fixture.

Brazil

The Brazilian side have been improving as the tournament has progressed. They began the World Cup with a draw against Morocco in a match where they struggled for long periods and needed a moment of individual brilliance from Vinicius to salvage a point.

They subsequently thrashed Haiti and rounded off the group stage with another convincing victory over Scotland. However, these last two matches leave some doubts as to Brazil’s true level, as neither of these opponents seems comparable to what they will now face.

What is clear, though, is that Brazil’s individual quality is immense. Vinicius is in spectacular form and is capable of deciding tight matches with a single moment of brilliance. Led by him and other stars such as Cunha and Guimaraes, the Brazilian national team looks capable of going far.

Japan

Japan have had a very solid group stage. They began with a draw against the Netherlands in a match where they came from behind twice, thrashed Tunisia convincingly and rounded off the group stage with a draw against Sweden, leaving a very positive impression.

Against the Swedes, they once again demonstrated that they are a very well-drilled side. Kamada and Tanaka controlled much of the midfield, Nakamura was once again a constant threat down the left, and the team barely conceded any chances defensively for long stretches of the match.

The impression is of a compact, organised side with enough resources to compete against any opponent. Furthermore, Japan have already shown in recent World Cups that they tend to thrive in closely fought knockout ties.

Our prediction: Brazil to qualify and under 4.5 goals in the match (odds 1.50)

Brazil remain favourites due to their individual quality and experience in this type of fixture, but I don’t expect an easy knockout tie. Japan are making a very serious impression, have a solid tactical structure and look like a much tougher opponent than Scotland or Haiti.

That’s why I don’t expect a rout. In fact, I think it could be a fairly tight match, with few chances, and one in which Brazil will have to work hard to secure their place in the next round. Even extra time wouldn’t be an unlikely scenario. On the strength of their quality, I see Brazil progressing to the next round, but it’s unlikely to be in a high-scoring match.
