With no margin for error, the equation is simple for the South American side: win or effectively bid farewell to the World Cup prematurely. Ecuador will take to the pitch with the obligation to take complete control of the game, something that they sometimes find harder than sitting back and playing on the counter-attack. However, the gap in individual quality is vast. The key for Beccacece will lie in having the patience to move the ball around and exploit the wide channels. Players such as Pervis Estupiñán on the left and the pace of Kendry Páez in central midfield must set the tempo. Up front, Enner Valencia will need to be much sharper in front of goal to break the deadlock early and prevent anxiety from taking hold of the team as the minutes tick by.

Curaçao, led by a defensive unit that suffered greatly from the speed of Germany’s counter-attacks, will try to sit deep to avoid another humiliating thrashing. Physical fatigue and a lack of experience in high-pressure international fixtures are their major weaknesses.

Ecuador will come out fighting from the opening whistle. The urgency to secure three points and the need to improve their goal difference will tip the balance in their favour.
