The second matchday of the World Cup pits two teams against each other who both started the tournament with a win and made a good impression in their respective opening matches. Mexico beat South Africa 2–0, whilst South Korea came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2–1. Everything points to a very evenly matched game that could prove crucial in the race to reach the round of 16.

Mexico

The Mexican side made a very positive impression on their debut. Javier Aguirre’s team clearly dominated South Africa thanks to a bold and well-organised approach. Mexico built their play from the back with a back three and wing-backs dropping deep, creating numerous dangerous chances.

Julián Quiñones was the standout player of the match thanks to his intensity, mobility and ability to lead the press. Raúl Jiménez also once again demonstrated his importance, sealing the victory with the second goal. Overall, Mexico showed organisation, character on the ball and a very recognisable tactical structure.

The downside was the sending-off of César Montes, a significant loss for a team that places great importance on defensive balance and which will be without one of its key figures at the back for this fixture.

South Korea

South Korea also made a strong impression on matchday one. Although they fell behind against the Czech Republic, they responded with character and ended up staging a fully deserved comeback.

The standout player was Kang-in Lee, who consistently made the difference between the lines and led much of his side’s attacking play. Alongside Son Heung-min, he forms one of the tournament’s most dangerous partnerships when he finds space to run into.

Beyond their individual talents, South Korea possess key attributes that make them a dangerous opponent: tactical organisation, collective discipline and a great ability to compete. They are a side that capitalises very well on quick transitions and can adapt to different game situations.

Our prediction: South Korea to win or draw (odds 1.85)

I believe this will be a much more evenly matched game than the odds suggest. It’s true that Mexico will have the support of their fans in Guadalajara and that they made a great debut against South Africa, but South Korea also performed to a very high standard against an opponent who, on paper, looked a tougher challenge.

Both teams dominated their respective matches, but South Korea’s comeback against the Czech Republic demonstrated character, quality and the ability to respond under pressure. Given how evenly matched the two sides are and the absence of César Montes in the Mexican defence, I believe there is value in the double chance bet in favour of South Korea.
