Few matches on Matchday 3 have such a clear-cut outcome. Panama are mathematically eliminated after two consecutive defeats and will end their World Cup campaign with nothing at stake but pride. England, on four points, have virtually secured their place in the round of 16 and head to MetLife Stadium with their minds already on the next round.

The problem for Tuchel is what Matchday 2 left in its wake. The 0–0 draw against Ghana was the poorest match of the group stage so far, with England’s first shot on target not coming until the 56th minute. A performance that stood in stark contrast to their debut display against Croatia and which raised real doubts about the team’s ability to maintain their level when the opposition closes down the spaces. Ghana managed to do just that by sitting deep from the very first minute, and Panama have enough physicality and defensive organisation to attempt something similar, although the difference is that the Africans had something to gain from a draw. The Panamanians no longer do.

And therein lies the key to this match. With nothing at stake, Panama can play with more freedom than they did in their first two matches, which, paradoxically, could prove problematic for England. Against Croatia, Panama were the more dangerous side in the first half, creating several clear-cut chances and seeing Rodríguez hit the post. They are not a team that gives up easily, and the betting markets reflect this.

That said, the gap in quality is too great to ignore. England have the squad, the motivation to top the group, and the need to regain their confidence ahead of the round of 16. Tuchel cannot afford another lacklustre performance.
