Qatar v Switzerland – predictions and odds – 2026 World Cup (13 June 2026)

San Francisco’s Levi’s Stadium will host the clash between Qatar and Switzerland, marking the World Cup debut for both sides. Qatar arrive keen to demonstrate their progress, as this will be their second consecutive World Cup following their hosting of the 2022 tournament. Switzerland, managed by Murat Yakin, are the clear favourites to top the group, though it won’t be as straightforward as it might seem.
‘Final score’ prediction
The truth is that there is a significant difference in competitive intensity when we look at the squads of both teams. Switzerland lacks star players but boasts a well-established squad in Europe’s top leagues, standing out for their solid defence. Qatar, despite their good ball control, have fewer resources and as the match progresses we will see them tire. I’m backing a Swiss win, no fuss, because I know the European side are the better team and tend to excel in major tournaments.
Prediction: ‘Under 2.5 goals’
Switzerland isn’t usually a team that takes risks, and Qatar is aware of its physical inferiority, so we could speculate that they’ll adopt a deep-lying defence, looking to force their opponents into mistakes and kill the game on the counter-attack. I see a difficult match for the European side, where the scoring might open up in the second half rather than early on.
‘Accumulator’ prediction
We are likely to see Switzerland win, but not necessarily by a large margin, nor do I see Qatar scoring more than one goal. Switzerland neither has the need nor the profile of a high-scoring side to go for a rout, especially in a first group stage match, which is more of a warm-up than a showcase ahead of facing stronger teams like Bosnia and Canada.
