Argentina’s greatest strength in this final is their refusal to let a match get away from them, but Spain may be the one side capable of denying them the kind of contest they prefer. The South Americans have repeatedly dragged games into emotional, chaotic territory, where experience and individual quality can take over. Spain, by contrast, have been at their best when removing that chaos altogether. For me, the central question is whether Argentina can disrupt Spain’s rhythm before the Europeans establish control.

The concern for Argentina is how much energy they have already spent reaching this point. Extra-time battles against Cape Verde and Switzerland, together with difficult comebacks against Egypt and England, have underlined their resilience but also exposed periods of vulnerability. Lionel Messi remains decisive, arriving with eight goals and four assists, yet he may have fewer inviting spaces against such a compact defence. Argentina can still produce a decisive moment, but they may struggle if forced to chase the ball for long stretches.

Spain’s campaign has followed the opposite pattern, with the team growing stronger as the standard of opposition increased. After an uncertain group-stage start, they dealt with Austria, Portugal, Belgium and France while conceding very little and rarely losing control. Their record of just one goal allowed, six clean sheets and no time spent trailing reflects more than defensive discipline. It shows a side comfortable managing scorelines, slowing games down and protecting themselves through possession rather than simply dropping deep.

That ability to defend with the ball is why I make Spain favourites to finish the job. Argentina have found solutions when opponents have retreated too early, but Spain are unlikely to surrender territory in the same way. They should continue pressing, circulating possession and forcing Argentina to defend further from goal, which could limit Messi’s influence between the lines. Argentina’s pedigree makes them dangerous until the final whistle, but Spain look fresher, more balanced and better equipped to control the decisive phases.
