Is Cheltenham Showcase 2026 Going Ahead This Weekend?

One Cheltenham cancellation has travelled faster than the horses. Yet the answer to ‘is Cheltenham Showcase going ahead?’ remains reassuring: the 23-24 October meeting is still scheduled. The abandoned race belongs to November’s Cross Country course, not the Old Course used for the Showcase. Here is what the ground reports actually mean for runners, visitors and punters.
What has Cheltenham cancelled, exactly?
Cheltenham has cancelled the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase planned for Friday 13 November because the specialist Cross Country course is firm and currently unraceable. The race has been moved to Festival Trials Day on Saturday 30 January 2027, when it will form part of an eight-race card.
The decision does not cancel the November meeting as a whole, nor does it amount to Cheltenham racing cancelled on 23 or 24 October. Separate surfaces have separate problems; treating them as one racecourse condition is the mistake behind the confusion.
Cheltenham Showcase ground: current going and weather
The published Friday racecard lists good ground, good to firm in places, with watering taking place. That description is a snapshot, not a promise that conditions cannot change before racing. A dry summer and warm early autumn have made preparation unusually demanding.
For punters, a going report is only the starting point. Horses returning after summer may lack a recent run under similar conditions; compare past performances on sound ground rather than relying on reputation alone.
The Jockey Club says irrigation resources were concentrated on the Old Course. Its mid-October forecast pointed towards limited rainfall and continued warmth, although later forecasts and fresh going readings must take precedence. Anyone travelling should check the official raceday status and any announced inspections on the morning of racing.
| Course | Current position |

| Old Course | Showcase scheduled, watering |
| Cross Country | November chase cancelled |

Cheltenham Showcase dates and first-race times
There is a proper weekend of jumping scheduled, not merely a provisional placeholder. Gates open at 11:15 on both days.
| Day | First race | Last race |
|---|---|---|
| Friday 23 October | 13:15 | 16:45 |
| Saturday 24 October | 13:10 | 16:40 |
Friday’s 15:00 Grade 2 novices’ hurdle stands out on the opening card. Its jumping test should also offer an early clue about how the surface is riding. Watch the first races before forming a fixed view. Saturday includes handicap chases and hurdles, although declared fields, race order and start times remain subject to official changes.
Cheltenham Showcase betting odds and markets
The ground matters just as much as reputation when assessing early-season novice form. For Friday’s 15:00 contest, these published fractional prices provide an early reference, checked on 20 October.
Explore our horse racing tips and compare each-way terms after final declarations. A tempting price on drying ground is not automatically value: compare recent jumping form, distance, field size and each-way places before committing.
What happens if the weather changes?
Officials can revise the going, arrange inspections or make further decisions if safety demands it. Postponement would require a new announcement; the cancelled November chase cannot be treated as evidence that Friday’s card is already lost.
An October opener should be judged on the course being raced, not the headline attached to another track. Check the going again before betting, and resist building a multiple around runners whose preferred ground is still uncertain
