Why Croatia must play behind closed doors
England visit Rijeka on Saturday 3 October, with kick-off scheduled for 5pm BST. The Nations League fixture remains subject to a UEFA stadium sanction against Croatia.
The punishment follows misconduct involving Croatian supporters during the March 2025 Nations League quarter-final against France. Reports of the disciplinary action included racist chanting, pyrotechnics and objects being thrown. England supporters were not responsible for those incidents. The allocation was restricted to active 2026-2028 England Supporters Travel Club members. Priority went to all-time caps totals, with active caps breaking ties. The ESTC described the allocation as “100 complimentary tickets”. Its updated figures show how narrow the route into the ground became.

Caps record attendance history within the supporters’ scheme. For this fixture, the emphasis on all-time totals rewarded years of following England, rather than treating every application as an equal-chance draw.
Simply joining the club now cannot undo the closed deadline or recreate that attendance record. Anyone reading an older announcement should check its update before making travel arrangements.
Free tickets still require a deposit
Successful applicants must pay a £30 holding deposit, refunded when they attend. Members unable to travel should notify the ESTC promptly; an unexplained no-show loses the deposit.
The eerie precedent from 2018
England have been here before. Their Nations League visit to Rijeka on 12 October 2018 finished 0-0, also behind closed doors following a separate UEFA sanction. Harry Kane and Eric Dier struck the woodwork, while Jadon Sancho made his senior England debut. Outside, some travelling fans watched from a grassy bank, their chants carrying into an unusually quiet ground.
That scene belongs to the history of the fixture. It should not be read as a practical route to watching the 2026 match without a ticket.
