Why UEFA gives the Champions League an exclusive week
The explanation sits in the calendar introduced alongside the expanded league phase in 2024/25. Each of UEFA’s three men’s club competitions receives a week without matches from the other two. UEFA’s format guide sets out the arrangement.
For the Champions League, that means Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The Europa League uses Wednesday and Thursday in its exclusive week; the Conference League keeps its dedicated Thursday.
This gives the opening fixtures more breathing room. With six matches each night, supporters face fewer simultaneous choices than when 18 games share two evenings. Every club still plays just once on matchday one.
Thursday has spent years wearing the Europa League’s colours. For this opening week, it borrows the starball and the grand entrance music instead: three nights of floodlights, anxious away ends and television panels trying to turn one September performance into a verdict on the whole season.
When do the five English clubs play?
Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Aston Villa enter on different nights. These are their opening fixtures in UEFA’s confirmed schedule, with times converted to BST.

United are the only English side playing on Thursday. That evening also includes Bayern Munich against Bodø/Glimt and Fenerbahçe against Roma, so the extra night is part of the competition-wide programme.
Does Thursday football continue all season?
The usual Tuesday–Wednesday pattern returns for matchday two on 13–14 October. Thursday is the opening-round exception in the league-phase schedule.
The calendar changes the viewing plan, while the sporting task remains eight matches against eight different opponents, split evenly between home and away. All 36 clubs share one table.
UEFA deputy general secretary Giorgio Marchetti described the intention succinctly: “We were looking for a more flexible format.” UEFA published his explanation after the first season of the new system.
