The tie is wide open, but with a significant advantage: Arsenal return to the Emirates with a 1-0 lead from the first leg thanks to a goal from Kai Havertz in stoppage time, in a match that was tighter than many expected and with Raya keeping things together when they were under pressure.

For me, there are two key factors. First, how Sporting approach the match: if they go all out from the start, the game could be decided by counter-attacks (and Arsenal are extremely dangerous when they win the ball and break forward). Second, emotional management: Sporting can get away with keeping the game even for 60–70 minutes, but they need to score… and that sense of anxiety often leaves gaps. In these matches, whoever manages the tempo best (time-wasting, tactical fouls, set-pieces) usually goes through.

Arsenal

Arsenal come into the game with the relative comfort of being ahead, but I don’t think Arteta will set out to simply ‘hold on’. In Lisbon, we saw that, in a closely fought tie, the team has resources on the bench: the goal came from a second-string move, and in the Champions League, that makes all the difference. Furthermore, the team continues to compete well in Europe: in the first leg, although it wasn’t a goal fest, they managed to withstand Sporting’s strong spell and strike at the end.

What I am keeping an eye on, however, is the squad situation. There’s a significant absence in midfield rotation (Merino), and that forces you to manage workloads and, at times, stretch out the minutes for first-team players beyond the ideal. Even so, at home I expect a more dominant Arsenal with the ball and more aggressive without it: pressing after losing possession, a strong presence in the middle to hold the ball up, and looking for Sporting’s typical weak spot when you force them to defend numerous crosses and second-ball situations.

The perfect plan for the Gunners is simple: score first. At 1-0, Sporting would need two, and that makes the game a much tougher uphill struggle for the Portuguese side. If Arsenal avoid losing possession on the break and don’t give away counter-attacks, they’re halfway there.

Sporting CP

Sporting are forced to go on the attack. In the first leg, they had good spells and even moments when they could have taken the lead, but it slipped away in the cruellest of ways: a lapse at the end. That sort of blow leaves you with the feeling that “it slipped away just when we had it”, and now they must show character in a demanding stadium.

The good news for them is that the script for the second leg is clear: they need a goal, and that usually boosts their attacking output. The bad news: if they break down, Arsenal can punish them with two or three very dangerous counter-attacks. For me, the key for Sporting is to attack without throwing caution to the wind: the team mustn’t leave too many players ahead of the ball, and their losses mustn’t occur in central areas. It’s better to progress down the flanks, get into the box and live off crosses and second-ball situations than to give away possession in the final third.

There are also availability factors: Sporting arrive with absentees in their squad and with limited options to rotate players up front, which could affect their ability to stick to the plan if the game gets bogged down. Furthermore, when players are on the verge of suspension due to yellow cards, the team often holds back on aggression in a match that demands intensity.

Arsenal to win

Odds 23/50

I’m not overcomplicating things here: the market already reflects that Arsenal are clear favourites at home. With a 1-0 lead, they can play more calmly, but they still have reasons to go for the win: if they score first, they’ll kill off the tie psychologically. Furthermore, Sporting will have to open up at some point, and that’s when Arsenal usually find their best form: winning the ball, launching quick attacks and finishing.

Arsenal to win to nil

Odds 11/10

I’ll be honest: these odds usually hover around 2.00–2.50 depending on the context, and this is the ‘bold’ pick that makes the most sense to me based on the script. Sporting need to score, but if Arsenal take the lead, the match could become very uncomfortable for the visitors. I reckon a 1-0 or 2-0 scoreline is a likely outcome for a well-managed second leg: Arsenal playing without rushing, Sporting pushing forward but coming up against a defence that, when organised in a compact midfield block, concedes little in the middle.
