West London is gearing up for the Fulham vs Chelsea derby at Craven Cottage. Both sides begin their campaigns under new managers, Álvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso respectively, adding a degree of uncertainty over how their styles will differ from last season. If we look at last season’s points totals, the picture is very even. Both clubs finished on 52 points, although Chelsea took 10th place on goal difference.

What stands out most to me is the contrast between Fulham’s strong home record and Chelsea’s higher attacking ceiling. That pushes me towards the visitors, but with some protection rather than blindly backing an away win.

How Fulham and Chelsea are shaping up

Fulham form

I’m very interested to see what Arbeloa does with this Fulham side. His arrival in July marked a clear change of direction, and his coaching profile points towards aggressive pressing and a greater willingness to play with the ball rather than simply protect space. Pre-season results have been mixed, although the final performance was encouraging. Fulham beat Stuttgart 1-0 at Craven Cottage, with Timothy Castagne scoring from an Alex Iwobi corner, after drawing 1-1 with Al-Ahli and losing 2-1 to Crystal Palace.

There are two important absences. Tom Cairney is out after undergoing a minor knee procedure, while Joachim Andersen is suspended.

Chelsea form

Chelsea arrive with a little more attacking momentum. They ended pre-season by beating AC Milan 3-0 and Real Sociedad 3-1, with João Pedro scoring twice in each match. Last season’s numbers already showed that Chelsea created considerably more chances than Fulham, and their summer performances suggest Alonso wants to push that attacking side even further.

There is still some uncertainty over the fitness of several players who returned late from the World Cup, although Alonso has said they are available for selection.

Key factors behind my Fulham vs Chelsea prediction

1. Fulham were much stronger at home

This is the main reason I do not see Chelsea as a straightforward bet. Fulham recorded an 11W-2D-6L record in their 19 Premier League matches at Craven Cottage last season, scoring 30 goals. That is a very respectable home return.

2. Chelsea carried much more attacking threat

Chelsea scored 58 league goals last season compared with Fulham’s 47. That does not guarantee an away win, but it does show which of the two attacks offered the greater threat across the full 38-game season.

3. Chelsea’s away record keeps me cautious

Chelsea’s 2025/26 away record was only 7W-5D-7L, meaning they dropped points in 12 of their 19 away fixtures. That is exactly why I prefer a Draw No Bet option for the conservative selection.

4. Fulham have important absences

Cairney’s absence removes experience and control, while Andersen’s suspension takes out a regular and experienced centre-back. Against a Chelsea side with Palmer, João Pedro and plenty of movement between the lines, I think those absences matter.

5. The price still gives Fulham respect

I think the market has broadly got the main prices right. Chelsea deserve to be favourites, but Fulham’s home record means I do not want to be too confident in an away win at a price only slightly above evens.

Fulham vs Chelsea statistics

As this is Matchweek 1, the most useful comparison is the completed 2025/26 Premier League season.

Fulham were clearly more reliable in the relevant home/away split, despite Chelsea finishing above them in the table.

Recent head-to-head

The two sides split last season’s league meetings, which underlines how evenly matched this fixture could be. Chelsea won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in August, before Fulham took the return fixture 2-1 at Craven Cottage in January.

For that reason, I would not use the 2-1 result as a clean indication of how this match should play out.

Chelsea are favourites, but not overwhelmingly so, which looks fair to me. Fulham’s numbers at Craven Cottage last season make them difficult to dismiss at these prices.

Odds 13/20

I’m taking the draw out of the equation. Chelsea have the stronger attacking tools, but Fulham won 11 home league games last season, so I’m not paying to pretend Craven Cottage is an easy away day. If Chelsea’s quality tells, we collect; if the derby gets messy and ends level, the stake comes back.

This has a bit more bite. Chelsea scored 32 away league goals last season and look sharp going forward, but Fulham are far more dangerous at the Cottage than their overall numbers suggest. I can see the hosts landing a punch, I just fancy Chelsea to have the heavier hands over 90 minutes.
