Burnley vs West Ham Prediction (EFL Championship) Odds and Bets 16.08.2026

Burnley and West Ham meet at Turf Moor on Sunday in one of the standout fixtures of the Championship’s opening weekend. Both are trying to bounce straight back after Premier League relegation, although I see considerably more stability and attacking quality in the West Ham squad at this stage. Burnley have started a new era under Nicky Hayen and their preparation has been less convincing, while Nuno Espírito Santo’s Hammers opened their competitive campaign with an encouraging cup victory. For my prediction, the key question is whether Burnley’s home advantage can compensate for the visitors’ superior forward options and stronger recent record in this fixture.

How Burnley and West Ham Are Looking
Burnley Form
The Clarets finished last season with just four Premier League wins from 38 matches, scoring 38 goals and conceding 75. Their final five league fixtures produced two draws and three defeats, including losses against Manchester City, Leeds and Arsenal.
Nicky Hayen’s first competitive game in charge also offered a warning. Burnley controlled plenty of possession against League Two Notts County in the Carabao Cup but could only draw 1-1 before progressing 4-3 on penalties. Zian Flemming equalised shortly after half-time, while goalkeeper Max Weiss was ultimately required to make two shoot-out saves.
West Ham Form
West Ham collected 39 Premier League points compared with Burnley’s 22, scored 46 goals and conceded 65. They also ended the league season by beating Leeds 3-0, even though Tottenham’s result elsewhere confirmed their relegation.
What interests me more is what happened last weekend. West Ham went behind against Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup but responded with three goals, eventually winning 3-1. Taty Castellanos scored twice and Jarrod Bowen got the other, with Bowen also supplying the cross for Castellanos’ second.
That is the attacking combination I trust most in this match. Bowen is an outstanding player at Championship level and Castellanos has started the season sharply.
Key Factors Behind My Burnley vs West Ham Prediction
1. West Ham Have the Better Attacking Ceiling
This is the biggest difference for me.
Burnley scored only 38 Premier League goals last season and generated one of the division’s lowest expected-goals totals. West Ham were not exactly free-scoring themselves, but they produced 46 goals and substantially more attacking output across the campaign. Burnley recorded roughly 33.4 xG compared with around 45.9 for West Ham.
Add Bowen and an in-form Castellanos to that equation and I think West Ham possess more ways of deciding a tight match.
2. Burnley’s Defence Remains a Concern
The Clarets conceded 75 times in 38 Premier League matches last season. Their expected-goals-against figure was also around 75, so I do not view that defensive record simply as bad luck or unusually clinical opposition finishing.
Dropping into the Championship should naturally make life easier, but the transition will not happen overnight.
Notts County managing to score at Turf Moor last weekend is another small warning. West Ham carry substantially more individual threat than Burnley faced in that cup tie.
3. West Ham Have Recently Matched Up Well Against Burnley
I never want to overrate historical head-to-head records because squads and managers change. In this case, however, the most recent meetings are relevant.
West Ham beat Burnley twice during the 2025/26 Premier League season. They won 3-2 at the London Stadium in November and then produced a much more controlled 2-0 victory at Turf Moor in February.
The Hammers are now unbeaten in eight consecutive meetings with Burnley, with the Clarets’ last victory in the fixture coming in 2020.
4. Turf Moor Keeps Me Away From an Overconfident Away Bet
This is where I think some bettors could go too far.
West Ham are my stronger side, but backing them away to another recently relegated Premier League club on the opening weekend is not risk-free. Burnley have an excellent recent record when playing at Championship level and home advantage should make this considerably more competitive than a normal relegated-side-versus-relegated-side comparison suggests.
That is why my safer selection gives us protection against the draw.
5. The Price on West Ham Is Still Interesting
The latest UK and international markets make West Ham favourites, but not overwhelming ones.
Sky Bet currently lists Burnley at 3.10, the draw at 3.40 and West Ham at 2.20 in decimal terms. Across a wider comparison of bookmakers, prices vary, with West Ham available at up to approximately 2.40 in places.
At anything around 2.25 or higher, I think the straight West Ham win starts becoming interesting. Below 2.10, I would be considerably less enthusiastic.

| 2025/26 H2H | 2 defeats | 2 wins |
*Burnley won 4-3 on penalties.
The biggest statistical gap for me is not simply last season’s points total. West Ham produced around 12 more expected goals while allowing roughly 14 fewer at the other end. That indicates a meaningful difference between the sides across 38 matches rather than one caused purely by finishing variance. Burnley should improve significantly against Championship opposition, but this opening fixture immediately pits them against another relegated club whose underlying Premier League numbers were stronger. West Ham’s 3-1 cup victory also gives me more confidence in their current attacking rhythm than Burnley’s penalty-shootout escape against Notts County.
Burnley vs West Ham Head-to-Head
West Ham won both league meetings last season:
- West Ham 3-2 Burnley — 8 November 2025
- Burnley 0-2 West Ham — 7 February 2026
The first meeting was relatively open, with West Ham generating 3.02 xG to Burnley’s 1.06 despite having less possession.
The return fixture was more convincing. First-half goals gave West Ham a 2-0 win at Turf Moor and extended their unbeaten sequence against Burnley.
