Club Friendly, 14:00 @ 15.08.2026

Chelsea and Real Sociedad meet at Stamford Bridge in their final pre-season test, and I see more competitive significance here than in the average summer friendly. It is Xabi Alonso’s first match in charge of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, while Sociedad arrive as the reigning Copa del Rey holders. Chelsea have mixed explosive attacking displays with some loose defending on tour; La Real, meanwhile, have lost three friendlies in a row and only welcomed Mikel Oyarzabal back to pre-season training this week. For me, Chelsea’s depth and home advantage are the main angles.

How Chelsea and Real Sociedad are coming into the match

Chelsea form

I think the raw win-loss record undersells some of their better football. Their five pre-season games have produced a 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers, defeats to Tottenham and Juventus, a particularly convincing 3-0 victory over AC Milan and a 3-3 draw with Johor Darul Ta’zim.

The Milan performance is the one that interests me most. Chelsea controlled the game, João Pedro scored twice to take his tour tally to five and Moisés Caicedo added the third. Alonso then changed his entire starting XI less than 24 hours later against Johor, so I am reluctant to read too much into the three goals conceded in Malaysia. Aaron Anselmino also went off injured in that match. Back at Stamford Bridge with six days between fixtures, I expect something much closer to Alonso’s preferred side.

Real Sociedad form

Real Sociedad started beating Wolves 2-1 and Aston Villa 4-2 in England, but their momentum has gone the other way since. They lost 2-1 at Toulouse before suffering successive 2-0 and 2-1 defeats against Köln. That leaves Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side with three consecutive losses and no clean sheet across their last five friendlies.

There is an important caveat: Mikel Oyarzabal has only just returned. Sociedad’s captain and leading attacking reference reported back to Zubieta on 10 August after his post-World Cup break, so I would be wary of assuming he is ready for a full 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge. Jon Gorrotxategi has also only recently rejoined group work after a pubic problem. With La Liga beginning against Betis six days later, managing workloads should matter to Matarazzo.

Key factors behind my Chelsea vs Real Sociedad prediction

Chelsea’s stronger recent ceiling

The 3-0 win over Milan carries more weight for me than Chelsea’s 3-3 against Johor because Alonso was able to field a considerably stronger side against the Italians. João Pedro scored twice, Chelsea controlled the match and their positional rotations in possession were specifically highlighted afterwards by Alonso.

Real Sociedad are still conceding too regularly

Their two wins came in open matches against Wolves and Villa, while the last three fixtures have all ended in defeat. Against Chelsea’s range of attacking options, I see that as a more relevant weakness than their overall pre-season record.

Chelsea can make better use of their squad depth

Chelsea changed all 11 starters after facing Milan a day earlier and were still able to field Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson, Estêvão and Jamie Gittens together. That depth matters in a friendly where substitutions can completely change the final half-hour.

Sociedad have quality of their own, but Oyarzabal’s late return means their most important forward is behind many of his team-mates in pre-season preparation. That tilts the attacking matchup further towards Chelsea for me.

The goal numbers immediately stand out, although Chelsea’s 6-4 against Western Sydney obviously inflates their average. More useful to me is that both sides have gone over 2.5 goals in four of five matches and Sociedad have not kept a clean sheet during that run. Chelsea are not watertight either, but their ability to beat Milan 3-0 with a strong XI shows the level they can reach when Alonso has more of his first-choice personnel together.

Chelsea to win

Odds 13/20

They looked sharp in the 3-0 win over Milan, have more depth and should benefit from being back at Stamford Bridge. Sociedad arrive after three straight defeats, so I’m happy to side with the Blues. The main risk is the usual pre-season rotation.

João Pedro Anytime Goalscorer

Odds 6/5

He has five goals on Chelsea’s tour and looks dangerous in Alonso’s fluid attack. Sociedad have conceded in five consecutive friendlies, which gives him a good opportunity if he gets enough minutes.
