How Everton and Manchester United Are Coming Into the Match
Everton Form
I like quite a bit of what Everton have shown in terms of resilience, even if I wouldn’t read too much into four points from only two league matches.
They opened with a 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace, then beat Preston 4-0 in the League Cup before rescuing a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth through James Tarkowski’s stoppage-time equaliser. Everton had only 42% possession in each of their two Premier League matches, yet conceded just once. That tells you plenty about the type of game Moyes is comfortable playing.
The bigger concern is attacking turnover. Iliman Ndiaye and Beto left late in the window, while Jack Grealish has returned on loan. Christian Nørgaard is unavailable and Hayden Hackney has also been carrying an ankle problem.
That makes Everton harder to judge going forward than their opening results suggest.
Manchester United Form
United have already given us two completely different performances.
They had 72% possession away to Hull on the opening weekend but lost 2-0. A week later, Michael Carrick’s side put five past Ipswich, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick in a 5-2 victory. United produced 33 shots in that match, and once Fernandes began receiving the ball closer to the Ipswich box, the difference in attacking quality became obvious.
What stops me blindly backing United here is the Hull performance. Everton are far more likely to give them that sort of problem than Ipswich were: deep spells without the ball, plenty of physical defending and a willingness to make United construct attacks rather than counter.
Carrick also has availability issues. Carlos Baleba, Manuel Ugarte, Amad and Matthijs de Ligt have been among those unavailable, while Mason Mount has been working his way back towards contention.
Key Factors Behind My Everton vs Manchester United Prediction
1. Everton Do Not Need Possession
This is probably the most important tactical point for me.
Everton averaged only 42% possession across their opening two Premier League matches but still took four points. United, meanwhile, had 72% of the ball at Hull and lost 2-0.
If Moyes can keep the middle compact and force United into slower attacks from wide areas, this could become uncomfortable for the visitors.
2. United Have Far More Match-Winning Quality
The other side of that argument is Fernandes.
His hat-trick against Ipswich was a reminder of how quickly United can punish a side once the game opens up. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha give Carrick additional movement around him, and Everton cannot simply defend their box for 90 minutes.
I would trust United more if they score first, because Everton’s approach becomes much less comfortable when they have to chase a match.
3. Everton’s Attack Has Changed at the Worst Possible Time
Selling Ndiaye and Beto immediately before this fixture matters.
Grealish gives Moyes another player who can retain possession and draw fouls, but there has been very little time to rebuild Everton’s attacking relationships. Thierno Barry now carries significantly more responsibility through the middle.
That is one reason I’m happier protecting myself against the draw rather than backing an outright Everton result.
4. Set Pieces Could Keep Everton in It
Everton’s late equaliser at Bournemouth came from a corner finished by Tarkowski, and that route will be important again.
When I’m looking at Everton against a technically stronger side, I always pay attention to dead balls because Moyes’ teams are comfortable turning an otherwise quiet attacking display into two or three major set-piece moments.
United therefore cannot afford unnecessary fouls or cheap corners.

| Last five league H2Hs | W1 D1 L3 | W3 D1 L1 |
Everton’s numbers are defensively stronger, but the sample is tiny and the underlying story is more nuanced. They have been happy to concede possession and defend for long stretches, whereas United have already scored five in a single match.
The H2H also leans towards United without being overwhelming. Everton have won one of the last five league meetings, United have won three, and the other finished level. That includes United’s 1-0 victory at Hill Dickinson Stadium in February 2026.
Recent Everton vs Manchester United Head-to-Head
| Date | Fixture | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 23 Feb 2026 | Everton vs Manchester United | 0-1 |
| 24 Nov 2025 | Manchester United vs Everton | 0-1 |
| 22 Feb 2025 | Everton vs Manchester United | 2-2 |
| 1 Dec 2024 | Manchester United vs Everton | 4-0 |
| 9 Mar 2024 | Manchester United vs Everton | 2-0 |
I would not make the H2H the centrepiece of the bet because squads and circumstances change quickly. The February meeting is relevant, though: United have already shown they can win a tight match at this stadium rather than needing a wide-open contest.
Recent Everton vs Manchester United last odds DAZNbet
The current 1X2 market has United as the away favourite, but not by a huge margin.
Those prices sit within the current market range, where United have generally been trading a little above even money and Everton around the 2/1 mark. Odds remain subject to movement before kick-off.
At 11/10, I’m not desperate to take United outright because of what happened at Hull. Their greater attacking quality does, however, make United-based markets more interesting than opposing them completely.
