The big question for me is whether Hibernian can offer enough attacking threat with the whole stadium against them, as they have failed to score in either of their two European away matches this season, while Gent have conceded just once in four Conference League qualifiers.

What I like most about Gent’s current form is not spectacular attacking football, but how compact they become defensively in European competition.

They drew both matches against LNZ Cherkasy 0-0 before progressing on penalties, then won 1-0 away to IFK Göteborg in Sweden before drawing the return leg 1-1. That leaves Rik De Mil’s side having conceded just one goal in four Conference League qualifiers.

Gent have not needed to play particularly open football to get results. In a first leg at home, I expect them to be patient rather than try to force the issue from the start.

Hibernian form

David Gray’s side have responded convincingly since losing their Premiership opener against Motherwell. They beat Shkendija 2-1 at Easter Road, won 2-1 away to Rangers, protected their European advantage with a 0-0 draw in North Macedonia and then defeated Partick Thistle 1-0 in the League Cup.

That win against Rangers, in particular, stops me from treating Hibernian as an easy opponent. They have already shown this month that they can defend under pressure and punish a theoretically stronger home side.

There is, however, an important caveat. Hibs have been operating on a Thursday-Sunday schedule for several weeks, including a trip to North Macedonia, and their last two matches have produced just one goal in total.

1. Gent’s European defensive record

This is my starting point. Gent have conceded just one goal in four Conference League qualifiers and have kept three clean sheets. Both matches against LNZ ended goalless, while Göteborg managed to score only once across the following tie.

2. Hibernian are yet to score away from home in Europe

For an away side who have gone 180 minutes without scoring and are clear outsiders in the betting, this is a worrying statistic. Hibs lost 2-0 in Kosovo against Malisheva before drawing 0-0 in North Macedonia.

3. Hibs are competitive enough to keep the match close

I do not automatically expect a comfortable Gent victory. Hibernian have already beaten Rangers at Ibrox this month and successfully managed a one-goal aggregate advantage in Skopje.

That makes scorelines such as 1-0 or 2-0 feel more likely to me than a comfortable home win by a wide margin.

4. The schedule has been demanding

Both clubs played on 13 and 16 August before this match, meaning neither has had a full week to prepare.

Hibernian’s workload has involved more travelling, however, with the trip to North Macedonia coming between domestic fixtures.

5. Gent’s price is short, but there is a case for it

Gent are currently priced at around 8/13 to win, with the draw at 29/10 and Hibernian at 9/2 in the 90-minute market.

At 8/13, the market is clearly asking punters to pay a premium for Gent’s home advantage and defensive record. I still think the price is playable, although I would be far less interested if it shortened significantly below 4/7.
