Hull City play their first Premier League match in nine years, and they could hardly face a tougher challenge. The Tigers welcome Manchester United to the MKM Stadium on the opening weekend of the 2026/27 season after securing promotion through the Championship play-offs, while United arrive having finished third last season.

For me, the main question is whether Hull’s organisation and the emotion surrounding their return can reduce what looks like a fairly clear gap in quality. United also have a few fitness concerns, but their attacking strength and underlying numbers still justify their status as favourites.

How Hull City and Manchester United arrive

Hull City form

Hull’s promotion was one of the more unusual stories of the last Championship season. Sergej Jakirovic’s side finished sixth with 73 points and a modest +4 goal difference.

Their five main pre-season matches produced two wins, two draws and one defeat: victories over Konyaspor and Caykur Rizespor, a draw with Kasimpasa, a 2-0 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt and a 0-0 draw with Nice. They therefore go into the opener without scoring in their final two friendlies.

Hull have also reportedly been without several first-team players, including Jack Butland, Eliot Matazo, Charlie Hughes, Joe Gelhardt and Hidemasa Morita, which is far from ideal for a side trying to make a strong start after promotion.

Manchester United form

United begin Michael Carrick’s first full season in charge from a much stronger position than 12 months ago. They finished third in the 2025/26 Premier League with 71 points, scoring 69 goals and conceding 50, while their season-long underlying numbers stood at 64.71 xG and 49.40 xGA.

Pre-season was less convincing. In their final five friendlies, United beat Rosenborg 5-0 and Atlético Madrid 2-1, drew 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain and Leeds, and lost 4-2 to AC Milan.

Matthijs de Ligt is expected to miss the opener despite returning to training, while Mason Mount has also been a doubt.

Key factors behind my Hull vs Manchester United prediction

1. Hull outperformed their underlying numbers

This is the biggest factor for me. Hull finished sixth in the Championship, but an expected-points total of only 53.07 would have placed them 23rd according to Opta’s model.

That does not mean last season was simply down to luck — winning tight matches is a skill in itself — but it does suggest that the step up in quality could expose their weaknesses more often.

2. United carry much more attacking threat

United scored 69 league goals last season and ended the campaign with a 3-0 away win at Brighton. Bruno Fernandes finished with a Premier League-record 21 assists, and Carrick can now build his attack around several proven threats rather than relying on a single source of creativity.

3. United’s defence stops me going too aggressive

The temptation is to look at a newly promoted Hull side facing last season’s third-placed Premier League team and expect a comfortable away win. I would not go that far without taking United’s defensive issues into account. Exactly what Hull will look like at Premier League level after promotion is still something of an unknown.

4. Hull’s home opener is the main upset factor

Newly promoted teams can be awkward opponents on the opening weekend because the tactical and quality gap can sometimes be offset by intensity, crowd support and a lack of early-season rhythm among established Premier League sides.

Hull also have a surprisingly good record in their Premier League openers, winning three of their previous five opening matches in the competition.

5. United’s win price looks fair rather than especially generous

This is an interesting market because the numbers line up almost perfectly. United are around 9/20 to win, implying a raw probability of roughly 69%, while Opta’s current simulation gives them a 68.9% chance of victory.

A United win is my conservative selection because I believe it is the most likely outcome.

Hull’s overall Championship numbers look respectable until they are compared with their underlying metrics. A side that conceded 66 goals in the second tier and significantly outperformed their expected points now have to face a United attack coming off a 69-goal Premier League season.

Hull vs Manchester United: head-to-head

The most recent Premier League meeting finished 0-0 at Old Trafford in February 2017. More broadly, Manchester United have never lost a Premier League match against Hull.

I would not place too much weight on those older head-to-head results because the squads, managers and circumstances are completely different.

Manchester United to Win

Odds 9/20

United are the safer play for me. Hull should make a game of it on their Premier League return, but the visitors have far more quality in the final third and enough depth to take control as the match wears on. Short price, yes, but still the most solid angle.

Manchester United -1 Three-Way Handicap

Odds 11/10

If you fancy United to make their superiority count, this is the livelier option. Hull’s attack has hardly fired in pre-season, while United have enough weapons to pull clear if they score first. There is more risk here, but the extra price makes it interesting.
