Ipswich Town welcome Liverpool to Portman Road in Premier League Matchweek 3 on Friday night, with both clubs still settling into new managerial eras. Gary O’Neil’s promoted Ipswich have already shown they can hurt top-flight opposition, but the 5-2 defeat at Manchester United exposed the scale of the defensive step-up. Liverpool arrive without a league win under Andoni Iraola despite creating enough to have taken more than two points from their opening games.

For me, the key betting angle is Liverpool’s attacking output against an Ipswich defence coming off a bruising afternoon at Old Trafford.

How Ipswich and Liverpool Come Into the Match

Ipswich Town Form

Ipswich have taken three points from their first two Premier League matches, beating Sunderland 2-1 before losing 5-2 at Manchester United. They have still shown attacking threat, scoring twice in both league games, and also beat Leicester 3-1 in the League Cup.

Injuries are a concern, with Jaden Philogene and Jack Taylor unavailable and several others, including Emersonn Correia da Silva, needing late fitness checks.

Liverpool Form

Liverpool have drawn both Premier League matches 2-2, against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. Their results have been disappointing, but their attacking numbers remain strong, with roughly 6.3 xG created across the two games.

The main issue has been defensively, with Iraola admitting his side have lacked intensity without the ball. Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni remain out, although Bradley Barcola adds another attacking option after joining from PSG.

Key Factors Behind My Ipswich vs Liverpool Prediction

1. Liverpool are producing chances at a much higher rate. Their opening two league fixtures generated around 3.15 xG per match in the xGStat model. Ipswich are at roughly 1.18. With such a small sample I would never treat those figures as definitive, but the gap is substantial enough to matter.

2. Ipswich can still trouble Liverpool’s defence. O’Neil’s side have scored twice in each league match, including opening the scoring at Old Trafford. Liverpool, meanwhile, have conceded twice against both Newcastle and Forest. That makes a straightforward Liverpool clean-sheet angle less appealing to me.

3. The Ipswich defensive numbers are the concern. Conceding five to Manchester United is the obvious headline, but the underlying figure was even more uncomfortable: United generated 5.76 xG in that match according to the same model.

4. Liverpool have more recovery time. Iraola’s side last played on Saturday lunchtime, while Ipswich were in action late on Sunday afternoon. It is hardly a huge scheduling edge, but Liverpool have had roughly an extra day to prepare.

5. Liverpool are favourites, but their defence changes how I want to bet the game. The outright away win is short, as you would expect. For anyone wanting more upside, combining a Liverpool victory with Ipswich getting on the scoresheet makes more sense to me than pushing towards a bigger Liverpool handicap.

The sample is tiny, so I would not build a bet simply because both sides happen to be 2/2 for BTTS or over 2.5 goals. The more meaningful contrast for me is chance creation. Liverpool have produced considerably more attacking threat than their two points suggest, whereas Ipswich’s defensive numbers were badly inflated by that Old Trafford defeat. Liverpool therefore look more likely to control the territory and chances, but the Reds have not yet defended well enough for me to assume Ipswich will be shut out.

Ipswich vs Liverpool Head-to-Head

The most recent Premier League meetings came in 2024/25, when Liverpool won 2-0 at Portman Road and 4-1 at Anfield. I would only give those results limited weight because both clubs have since changed managers and personnel, but they do at least show the scale of the quality gap Liverpool were able to exploit in Ipswich’s previous top-flight campaign.

Ipswich vs Liverpool Odds

The following are a market snapshot checked on 2 September 2026. Prices can move before kick-off.

At around 4/7, Liverpool are being priced as clear favourites. I think that is broadly fair rather than spectacular value on its own. Where the game becomes more interesting is Liverpool’s defensive record: four goals conceded in two matches gives Ipswich a realistic route onto the scoresheet without forcing me away from the visitors as the likelier winners.

Liverpool to Win

Odds 3/5

I’m keeping this one clean. Liverpool have created far more than two draws suggest, and Ipswich have just allowed Manchester United to run riot. The Reds don’t need to be flawless here; they just need their attacking quality to tell.

Liverpool to Win & Both Teams to Score

Odds 17/10

Same Liverpool lean, but with a bit more spice. Ipswich have found the net in every league match so far and Liverpool haven’t kept anyone quiet. I can see the hosts landing a punch, and Liverpool landing a couple more.
