Leigh Leopards host St Helens in Round 26 of the Super League on Friday night, with the play-off race giving this one real weight. Leigh sit fifth on 32 points, while Saints are seventh on 28 with only two regular-season rounds remaining.

Both sides are looking to respond after defeats, but Leigh’s overall body of work convinces me more. Their defensive numbers have been clearly stronger across the season, and home advantage could matter against a St Helens side whose margin for error has all but disappeared.

And that is where my main question, and the answer you are looking for, comes in: do Leigh simply win, or can they also cover a double-digit handicap?

How Leigh and St Helens come into the match

Leigh Leopards form

Leigh arrive bruised, not broken. The 30-18 defeat at Huddersfield ended a run of three straight wins, but the Leopards had already shown their character by winning away at league leaders Leeds and thrashing Bradford 62-10.

The biggest difference is at the back: Leigh have conceded 86 fewer points than Saints this season. Even when their attack is not at its best, their defence usually keeps them in the contest.

St Helens form

The February meeting finished 20-18 to Saints, but Leigh won this fixture at home 28-10 in September 2025.

I would not place too much weight on older meetings. Personnel and coaching circumstances change too quickly in rugby league for results from previous seasons to play a major role in the bet.

Key factors behind my Leigh vs St Helens prediction

1. Leigh have been the more reliable side

Leigh are 16-9 after 25 rounds, while Saints are 14-11. More importantly, Leigh have a +120 points difference compared with just +36 for St Helens.

That is a significant gap built over almost an entire regular season, rather than something created by one or two results.

2. The defensive gap matters

There is almost nothing between the sides in points scored: Leigh have 588 and Saints 590.

Defensively, though, Leigh have conceded 468 points compared with 554 for Saints. That works out at roughly 18.7 points allowed per game for Leigh versus 22.2 for St Helens.

From a betting perspective, that is one of the strongest arguments in favour of the home side.

3. Saints are under pressure to chase the game

The league table puts far more pressure on Saints. Leigh are fifth on 32 points, Hull KR sixth on 30 and Saints seventh on 28, with just two rounds remaining.

If Saints fall behind, they may have to take more risks. Against a Leigh side capable of punishing broken-field opportunities, I do not necessarily see that as an advantage for the visitors.

4. The first meeting was very different

Saints beat Leigh 20-18 in February, so it would be a mistake to treat this as an automatic home win. Leigh actually led 16-12 at half-time before Saints edged it late.

Six months on, however, the season numbers favour Leigh much more strongly than that two-point margin suggests.

5. The handicap is demanding, but not unreasonable

A Leigh -10.5 line asks for more than simply backing the better side.

Still, Saints have just conceded 34 points at home to Leeds, while Leigh put 62 past Bradford only a week before their Huddersfield setback. For anyone looking for more value than the short outright price, that handicap is the market that interests me most.

The difference is in defence. Saints have scored virtually the same number of points as Leigh, but the Leopards have conceded 86 fewer this season. When the game gets tight, Leigh have something Saints currently lack: room for error without falling apart.

Leigh Leopards to Win

Odds 3/10

I’m not trying to be too clever here. Leigh have been steadier across the season, they’re at home and their defensive record gives them an edge Saints simply haven’t matched. Saints are dangerous enough to keep it awkward, but I still expect Leigh to get the job done.

Bold Brother: Leigh -10.5

Odds 1/1

This is where I’d push it. If Leigh get their tempo right early, Saints may have to open the game up because of their play-off situation. That suits the Leopards. I can see a close first half turning into a more comfortable home win after the break.
