Manchester City begin their 2026/27 Premier League campaign at home to Bournemouth, with both clubs starting the season under new managers. Enzo Maresca has succeeded Pep Guardiola at City, while Marco Rose has replaced Andoni Iraola.

For me, that change in the dugout is the most important part of the analysis. City are clear favourites at the Etihad, but the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield showed that Maresca’s new side is still a work in progress.

How Manchester City and Bournemouth are shaping up

Manchester City form

City finished second in the 2025/26 Premier League with 78 points, scoring 77 goals — the highest total in the division — and conceding only 35. Their underlying attacking numbers were also strong.

The big question is how quickly Maresca can make the team his own. City drew 1-1 with Inter before beating a K-League All-Stars side 3-1 and Atlético Madrid 3-1 during pre-season. Their first competitive test was far less encouraging, with Arsenal beating them 3-0 in the Community Shield.

I would not overreact to one defeat, particularly against the reigning champions, but it does matter for this prediction. City were punished early in both halves and failed to score, a sign that the transition from Guardiola to Maresca still needs time.

Bournemouth form

Bournemouth’s 2025/26 season deserves plenty of credit. They finished sixth with 57 points, scored 58 goals and qualified for Europe for the first time in the club’s history.

Iraola also left after a run of 18 consecutive league matches unbeaten, the longest unbeaten sequence in a single season in Bournemouth’s history. They later drew 2-2 with Real Betis before losing 2-1 to Mainz.

Those results suggest Bournemouth should continue to carry a threat going forward. One confirmed absentee is Junior Kroupi, last season’s 12-goal top scorer for the Cherries, who is sidelined with a right-foot injury.

Key factors behind my Manchester City vs Bournemouth prediction

1. City still have the stronger baseline

The managerial change does not erase the overall gap between these two squads.

City scored 77 Premier League goals last season compared with Bournemouth’s 58 and conceded 19 fewer. That is why I am still building my prediction around a City victory.

2. Bournemouth can make City uncomfortable

What stops me from treating this as an obvious handicap spot is Bournemouth’s ability to press and attack quickly. Rose is associated with an aggressive pressing style, so the tactical identity built under Iraola is unlikely to be replaced by passive football.

3. The Etihad changes the picture

Last season’s meeting in Manchester looked very different. City won 3-1 at the Etihad, with Erling Haaland scoring twice. That is much closer to the type of game I expect on Sunday: Bournemouth pressing bravely, but leaving City more space to attack.

4. The price matters

At 1/2, the straight City win does not excite me too much. The price reflects a clear home advantage, but I would rather look for a bigger return through a goals or handicap market. The basic read remains the same: City are the most likely winners, but I do not want to settle for such a short price.

The numbers give City a clear edge, but Bournemouth’s profile is more competitive than the odds might suggest. They lost only seven league matches last season, just one more than City, while their 18 draws show how difficult they became to beat.

Recent Manchester City vs Bournemouth head-to-head

City won 3-1 at the Etihad on 2 November 2025, with Haaland scoring twice, before Bournemouth held them to a 1-1 draw on 19 May 2026. I find those two matches much more relevant than older meetings.

The market gives City a clear advantage, which makes sense at home. I agree with that direction, although I prefer combining a City win with a goals condition.

Beni

Manchester City to win & over 1.5 goals

Odds 11/20

This is my main play. City should have too much at the Etihad, and Bournemouth’s defensive numbers give the hosts enough room to create. A 1-0 is the obvious danger, but I’d rather take this than the short straight win.

Manchester City -1 three-way handicap

Odds 11/10

For a bit more upside, I like City to win by two or more. They beat Bournemouth 3-1 here last season and should create chances again if the visitors press high. Riskier, yes, but the price makes it interesting.
