Manchester City arrive at the Etihad looking every inch like a side already in control of the season: four Premier League wins from four, eight goals scored and only two conceded, with their last two league victories both ending 1-0. Sunderland, though, are not coming to Manchester just to make up the numbers. Régis Le Bris’ side have taken four points from four games, pushed Arsenal harder than the 2-0 scoreline suggested and arrive fresh from a disciplined 1-0 Europa League win over AZ Alkmaar. The numbers tell their own story:

City have kept four straight clean sheets in all competitions
• Sunderland’s four league games have all stayed under 3.5 goals
• seven of the eight combined Premier League matches played by these sides have produced fewer than four goals.

Maresca has already warned that Sunderland can make this a difficult afternoon, and with Phil Foden suspended but Erling Haaland rested in midweek, City should still have enough firepower to control proceedings. Sunderland will scrap, squeeze the spaces and try to turn the afternoon into a street fight rather than a shootout.

The conclusion: City are the obvious winners on paper, but the more interesting angle is a controlled home victory rather than an Etihad demolition job – under 3.5 goals, or Manchester City to win and under 3.5, fits the early-season evidence far better than simply chasing a rout.

City are priced as clear favourites, which is difficult to argue with after four wins from four. I am less keen on taking 3/10 as a single, though. Sunderland have already shown enough defensive organisation to suggest this could stay competitive for longer than the outright price implies.

For the goals markets, under 3.5 goals is available at 4/7, while Manchester City to win and under 3.5 goals is available at 23/20.

Under 3.5 Goals

Odds 3/5

I'm keeping this simple. Sunderland know how to slow games down, and City have looked much more controlled defensively in recent weeks. I can see City doing the job without this turning into a shoot-out.

Manchester City to Win and Under 3.5 Goa

Odds 23/20

This is the one I prefer at the bigger price. Fresh Haaland, home advantage and City's defensive run point towards something like 2-0 rather than chaos. Sunderland can make them work for it, but I still expect City to get there.
