Zonneveld could hardly have asked for a better introduction to the World Grand Prix. Facing Josh Rock, one of the seeded players and a formidable scorer, he came through 2-1 with a 92.14 average, four 180s and eight successful finishing doubles from 15 attempts.

It was the deciding set that impressed me most. Zonneveld closed legs with finishes of 103, 116 and 133, the latter completing the victory. In a format that can become chaotic when players struggle to get away, that level of composure on the finishing doubles is significant.

His season has not been consistently spectacular, but there have been enough strong performances to show his ceiling. He pushed Stephen Bunting all the way to a 13-12 defeat at the World Matchplay and had match darts in that contest.

Zonneveld entered this tournament ranked 35th in the world, yet his performance against Rock showed why ranking alone is a poor way to price this particular match.

Gary Anderson form

Anderson’s opening performance was a tale of two halves.

Damon Heta took the first set 3-1 and then moved within a dart of eliminating the Scot in the second. Anderson survived that opportunity and produced a 115 checkout to force a deciding set before suddenly finding another gear.

He won the final set 3-0, finishing the match with a 90.11 average and seven successful checkout doubles from 12 attempts.

That average does not properly represent Anderson’s usual scoring level. We have already seen this season what happens when his timing clicks: at the World Matchplay he demolished Ryan Joyce 10-2 with a 109.96 average, one of the highest in the history of the event.

There are still questions around his consistency in the double-start format, which has never been his most natural tournament. Even so, I saw enough in the closing stages against Heta to suggest the scoring game remains in good order.

Anderson has the higher scoring ceiling

This remains the clearest difference between them.

Zonneveld has developed into a dangerous player and owns a solid three-dart average of around 94 across the last 12 months. Anderson, however, is still capable of operating comfortably above the 100 mark when his game settles.

His 109.96 display at the World Matchplay was an extreme example, but it illustrates the problem Zonneveld faces. If both players start their legs efficiently, I expect Anderson to create more opportunities through sheer scoring weight.

Zonneveld’s finishing against Rock was excellent

This is where I would be cautious about backing Anderson on an aggressive handicap.

Zonneveld hit eight of 15 finishing doubles against Rock and produced three ton-plus checkouts in the deciding set alone.

Those are pressure darts rather than empty statistics. He was playing against the seventh seed, in his first World Grand Prix appearance, with the match on the line.

I do not expect him to disappear simply because Anderson is standing on the opposite side of the oche.

Anderson cannot afford another slow start

Anderson dropped the opening set against Heta and came within one missed match dart of going home.

That matters because Zonneveld has already shown he is capable of punishing mistakes. In this format, a player can find himself a set down remarkably quickly if the starting doubles refuse to cooperate.

Anderson eventually produced five successive winning legs against Heta, which is why I still favour him. But I would rather back him to win the match than assume he dominates from the opening visit.

Their recent head-to-head was extremely close

They have only met twice in notable PDC competition and the record stands at one win each.

The most relevant encounter came at the World Masters in January 2026. Anderson won 3-2, averaging 101.21 compared with Zonneveld’s 95.01.

Zonneveld actually finished more efficiently in that contest, converting five of eight checkout opportunities, but Anderson’s heavier scoring eventually carried him through.

Their other meeting came at the 2021 World Series Finals, where Zonneveld won 6-4.

I would not put too much weight on a match from five years ago, but January’s 3-2 contest is another reason I expect Thursday’s meeting to be competitive.

Anderson’s price is short without being prohibitive

Anderson is currently around 1/2, with Zonneveld available at approximately 7/4.

A price of 1/2 corresponds to an implied probability of 66.7% before accounting for the bookmaker margin.

That feels broadly in line with the matchup. Anderson deserves favouritism because of his superior scoring level and experience, but Zonneveld has just beaten Rock and has already pushed Anderson to five sets this year.

For that reason, I prefer the straightforward match winner as the conservative bet rather than an Anderson handicap.

The round-one statistics underline why I think Zonneveld can make this interesting. He actually averaged two points more than Anderson and hit four times as many 180s, while both players converted more than half of their finishing opportunities.

The difference is that Anderson’s long-term scoring level remains higher than what he showed against Heta. Zonneveld probably needs something close to his best for three sets to win this; Anderson has a little more room for an ordinary spell because his A-game can create separation quickly. That is the main reason I still side with the Scot.

The second of those matches is far more relevant to me. Anderson averaged 101.21 and still needed a deciding fifth set because Zonneveld finished efficiently and refused to go away.

Thursday’s double-start rules change the equation again, but that recent encounter suggests this is unlikely to be comfortable if Anderson produces another patchy opening.
