Sinner and Djokovic face off once again in a Grand Slam semi-final with much more than just a place in the final at stake: the Italian is defending his Wimbledon title and is in better physical form, whilst the Serb continues to prove that he can never be written off on the grass courts of London. Sinner is the bookies’ favourite, but Djokovic’s head-to-head record and experience prompt us to take a closer look at the match.

Sinner’s current form

Sinner goes into this semi-final in increasingly good form. He struggled in the first round against Kecmanovic, but since then he hasn’t dropped a set, and his victory over Struff in the quarter-finals gave the impression of total control: 7-5, 7-6 and 6-3, with 16 aces and 84 per cent of points won on his first serve. Furthermore, he is the reigning Wimbledon champion – a significant factor to bear in mind.

Key factors

Sinner’s biggest advantage is his freshness. After that gruelling first-round match, he has gradually reduced the physical toll and reaches the semi-final on the back of four consecutive victories without dropping a set. He performs much better on grass and tends to defend every point well. There is also an interesting psychological factor: he is defending his 2025 title, which could create pressure, but in his case it seems to act more as fuel than as a burden.

He leads their head-to-head record 6-5, although at Wimbledon the record stands at 1-2: Djokovic won in 2022 and 2023, but Sinner swept him aside in three sets in the 2025 semi-final.

Djokovic’s current form

Djokovic is back where he almost always finds himself at Wimbledon: in the semi-finals. His victory over Auger-Aliassime was a demonstration of competitive resilience, but it also raised concerns about his physical condition due to the gruelling nature of the match: five and a quarter hours, five sets and several moments of immense tension.

The Serb has reached his 15th Wimbledon semi-final and his ambition to fight for another Grand Slam remains intact, but this time he arrives with less room for recovery than Sinner.

Key factors

Djokovic possesses the intangible factor that carries the most weight in matches of this kind: he knows how to play Wimbledon semi-finals like no one else.

On the downside, it must be remembered that he is coming off the back of an incredibly gruelling clash against Auger-Aliassime, featuring tie-breaks, a closed roof and maximum tension right until the end. At 39, recovering after five hours and a quarter is harder, however much experience he may have.

Mentally, however, he remains extremely dangerous: at the 2026 Australian Open, he ended a run of five consecutive defeats against Sinner by beating him in five sets.

Head-to-head statistics: Sinner vs Djokovic

The head-to-head record shows much more balanced figures. Sinner holds a narrow lead, but Djokovic has more experience on grass and a track record on Centre Court that is hard to match. The current difference lies in the Italian’s physical form and recent consistency.

Djokovic makes up for it with experience and status, but Sinner comes into the match with a better overall performance in 2026, better serving statistics and having expended far less energy in the quarter-finals. The Italian’s low odds make sense, although the outright winner bet offers little value.

Sinner to win the first set

Odds 2/5

I prefer this to a straight Sinner win in terms of the odds. The Italian has started his recent matches very strongly, coming off the back of four consecutive wins without dropping a set, whilst Djokovic is coming off a gruelling battle. In a best-of-five match, the Serb may grow into the game as it progresses, but the early stages should favour Sinner.

Sinner to win 3-1

Odds 9/4

Sinner winning 3-0 is tempting, but Djokovic rarely leaves a Wimbledon semi-final without finding a way back. The Italian is likely to come out on top, but I can’t see a match where Djokovic doesn’t at least put up a fight by winning a set.
